Error 45" Mark as New Bookmark Subscribe Subscribe to RSS Feed Highlight Print Email to a Friend Report Inappropriate Content 2010-03-05 03:48 PM I struggled big time to get Time Machine to work correctly with my new Stora/Snow Leopard/Wifi combination. I kept getting the following error message: "Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image could not be created (error 45)"This is how to fix it and get your backups working (follow carefully and in order and you'll have it up and running in no time):The basic concept is Time Machine needs to create a sparsebundle image to save the backups to. The key here is creating your own, BUT knowing where to save it on the Stora and knowing where to point Time Machine to using it.1) Firstly, be sure to enable the 'Computer Backups' feature in the Stora Preferences (through the landing page), and assign a password (I found it worked best for me to use the same password that i used for the main admin user of the Stora).2) Go to System Preferences on your Mac > Sharing and make sure you have a computer name, no

The first time machine setup worked fine and I got to backup my Mac probook just fine. After a month I got error messages saying backup https://community.netgear.com/t5/Stora-Legacy/Solution-to-quot-Time-Machine-could-not-complete-the-backup/td-p/294697 failed. now I try to create a new backup by 1. selecting backup disc NONE and then 2 creating new backup -selecting the backup device and time machine tries to "make disc space available" - this is taking about 2 minutes. Then I get an error message: Time machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image"/Volumes/GoFlexHome Public-1/KM's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45). The error is displayed as error http://www.mactalk.com.au/19/96115-time-machine-error-17-45-a.html 17 as well. I have no problem accessing the network drive at all thanks Kai Reply With Quote 26th December 2010,08:23 AM #2 snark Join Date Apr 2005 Location Melbonia Posts 2,192 In my experience, backing up using Time Machine to a disk connected to your wireless router works perfectly well - until it doesn't. I had the same thing happen to me when I used a NAS drive. Unless you are using a Time Capsule, you really are better off connecting the disk directly to your machine. Because Time Machine uses a dual-ended checksum protocol, it is only compatible with a directly-connected USB/FW/SATA drive, a networked Time Capsule, or another Mac running OSX 10.5.2 or greater. Even though Apple's own AEBS lets Time Machine save its backup bundle to an AirDisk, it is officially unsupported. Once a Time Machine archive develops a fault, the entire archive is un-usable, and should be deleted and the whole backup started over from scratch. backup on a NAS (as opposed to an external drive attached to a router) and it needs to be repaired. The NAS is likely a hardware product from the likes of Netgear, Synology, Buffalo or QNap - or for those of us http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-based-backup-errors.html with a home-grown backup server running FreeNAS. The error you may see is "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you." This can be fixed by following http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/guide-time-machine-and-networked-drive.1511597/ the below. From your Mac, connect to the network share that houses the sparsebundle. At the top level of the drive are the various sparsebundles that make up your individual computer backups. Do not double click on these time machine sparsebundles or try to repair with Disk Utility. Open Terminal and then switch to root by typing sudo su - and then enter your password. The verication that has already run has marked your sparsebundle as bad, so first we need to make it look normal. From the command line chflags -R nouchg /Volumes/{name of your network share}/{name of}.sparsebundle This may take a little while. Now type hdiutil attach -nomount -noverify -noautofsck /Volumes/{name of your network goflex time machine share/{name of}.sparsebundle You will then see something like /dev/diskx Apple_partition_scheme
/dev/diskxs1 Apple_partition_map
/dev/diskxs2 Apple_HFSX Where x is the disk id for the external disk. You are interested in the one labeled Apple_HFSX or Apple_HFS. It might be 2, 3, 4 or higher. At this point, I have found that the filesystem check is already happening. You can check for activity by tail'ing the fsck_hfs.log tail -f /var/log/fsck_hfs.log If fsck is going then in my experience it will be able to repair the sparsebundle. Go away for a few hours and let it chug away. When it is done, you will either see ‘The Volume was repaired successfully' or ‘The Volume could not be repaired' If the latter you can run disk repair again: fsck_hfs -drfy /dev/diskxs2 (Optionally if you have the available RAM, you can set a RAM cache in the command above to help speed up this command like so: fsck_hfs -drfy -c 750 /dev/diskxs2 This will use 750MB of RAM - feel free to change this amount to best fit your system (amount of RAM vs size of your Time Machine Sparsebundle). If you are unsure about this, use the first command. Make sure to replace x with whatever number your disk is from the output above. The letters "drfy" tell the filecheck utility different things. d for ‘Show Debug' - r for ‘Rebuild
