Initially I suspected it was a hardware issue. Therefore, I reset CMOS, problem remains, Checked my Maxtor Harddisk (with PowerMax), no problem found, Checked my DDR400 SDRAM (with Memtest), no error found. Any idea? Thanks in advance. Try a System Restore from here Boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 at bootup and choose 'Safe mode with command prompt' At the command prompt type C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe Hopefully System Restore will open so choose a Restore Point a few days ago. If that does not work I think you will have to do a Repair of XP Elaine If it ain't broke, leave it alone. A boot to safe mode is unsuccessful, the same unknown hard screen appears. I've tried a Windows repair, but after the pc reboots the same error prevents the repair process from continuing. I can access the recovery console and have tried a bootcfg /rebuild with no luck. All help much appreciated. This problem may occur if the file that is described in the error message is corrupted. The following files are checked for integrity when Microsoft Windows XP starts: • All driver files (except those that are loaded by the system loader to start. the computer) • All dynamic-link libraries (DLLs), including User, Graphics Device Interface (GDI), Shell, Kernel, Ntdll, Crtdll, and others. This problem may occur if you install an inappropriate driver for your hardware. For example, you receive one of the error messages that are described in the "Summary" section if you install a millions of instructions per second (MIPS) driver on an X86-based computer. This problem may occur if an Iomega Zip drive is on the same integrated device electronics (IDE) cable as the hard disk drive.
