Michael_S Jr. Member Posts: 43 Explorer.exe Unknown Hard Error « on: June 08, 2015, 07:08:30 PM » I'm getting the Windows 8.1 explorer.exe "Unknown: Hard Error". Basically, when I boot into normal mode, explorer.exe crashes instantly and failts to restart. This leaves me with a blank screen in which I can open task manager(ctrl+shift+esc), but cannot run explorer.exe again. The MBAM scan came back clean, and so did the avast! scan. I've run sfc.exe, which found no integrity errors. I've also run dism.exe, which gave me "Error: 0x800f0906" as well as stating that the source files could not be downloaded. FRST was run in safe mode, as this was the only way possible for me to produce logs. If I can boot into normal mode without explorer.exe crashing, I will upload those logs. Thank you. I ran chkdsk in normal mode, but it found no errors. I just ran it in safe mode, and it said the drive must be repaired. I'm hoping for the best, thanks! Now, I no longer get the error, but at boot explorer.exe does sometimes crash; however, it reloads within seconds. I thought I had fixed it, but nothing loads at startup besides unchecky, MBAM, and Geforce Experience. I tried to run a scan with MBAM which told me that the rootkit drivers failed to load, and this quite possibly could be caused by rootk
