Initially I suspected it was a hardware issue. Therefore, I reset CMOS, problem remains, Checked my Maxtor Harddisk (with PowerMax), no problem found, Checked my DDR400 SDRAM (with Memtest), no error found. Any idea? Thanks in advance. Try a System Restore from here Boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 at bootup and choose 'Safe mode with command prompt' At the command prompt type C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe Hopefully System Restore will open so choose a Restore Point a few days ago. If that does not work I think you will have to do a Repair of XP Elaine If it ain't broke, leave it alone. I didn't use pcAnywhere. System restore is not needed as I saved an image before the problem occurs, therefore I can roll back to the point before the problem starts. However,

I was using it today and it was lagging so I restarted it. When it was restarting, it got to the login screen and then suddenly went to a blue screen saying "STOP: c000021a Unknown Hard Error". After trying to restart the computer in safe mode with and without DOS, I still got the same message. Then I tried starting it up again normally, and I got a "Unmountable_Boot_Volume" message. unknown hard error Can anyone tell me what's wrong with it? And could the files on the hard drive be saved? They are similar to the blue screen errors that were present on Windows 9x, however there is no option to try and resume the session in a Windows NT Stop Error (Windows 2000 and all XP members included)." STOP: c000021a Unknown hard error Unknown hard error I know this is not a hardware error as it happens after a scheduled CHHDSK is performed. I invoke `CHKDSK /F` and schedule the check to be done on the reboot. Windows XP re-boots and perofrms the volume check. It reboots again and I determine that the BSOD appears just at the point where the `Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete` dialogue appears. A memory dump file is NOT generated and also nothing is shown on the event logs. From my searches, the problem I've encountered is not unique to me. It's been spotted by other individuals. I've also seen the various articles on Microsoft's KB, but none describe this particular problem. Remember, it only happens when Windows XP Pro (SP1) reboots after the volume has been checked by CHKDSK. It would have been useful of the BSOD told me which file caused the hard error, but alas, I should be so lucky.
