PC will automatically power down up vote 0 down vote favorite All of a sudden my HP Pavilion a6357c has started having issues with the fan. Whenever it boots up, the error message in the title appears and the computer powers down. After a few attempts the computer eventually turns on and runs fine, but clearly a problem exists. I've looked around, but all solutions end at the user changing the BIOS http://superuser.com/questions/485292/error-cpu-fan-has-failed-pc-will-automatically-power-down settings to a lower fan level, a feature which my BIOS does not support. I run Windows 7 Home Edition on an otherwise unaltered machine. Is my power supply too weak, or maybe the connection in some wire growing old? Help diagnosing would be appreciated. Edit: Fan is not broken to the best of my knowledge. It always spins up, though it's speed varies which I think is normal. I heard this could happen if there is inadequate power. How would I diagnose that? Oh and it's as clean as I can get it :) fan hp-pavilion cpu-cooler share|improve this question edited Aug 16 at 16:20 Hennes 50.8k775120 asked Oct 9 '12 at 5:03 ExitFailure 41149 Did you check if the fan actually has failed? If it is broken then the obvious solution would be to replace it. If it is not broken then you really want to add that to the original post. –Hennes Oct 9 '12 at 6:47 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote Some fans have a built in speed sensor (tach) that feeds back a signal to the Motherboard. This lets the Motherboard know that the fan is actually rotating and at what speed. This is typically done by having a tiny magnet

RWKTOMB Guest False CPU Fan Failure Message HP & Others « on: January 14, 2012, 03:18:38 AM » Hello All:I happened on this forum and noted that there were several posts about a "False CPU Fan Failure Message" that users cpu fan have been experiencing. Although there are numerous reasons for this message being generated, most are false and have nothing to do with a failed CPU fan. Many are lead to believe or assume that the CPU fan has failed because of this message, a USB hub is at fault, and numerous other suspicions.99% of the time when one opens the computer case they immediately note that the CPU Fan is running, there's no cpu fan has dust or any other issue that can be detected, however this warning message continues to be generated. This issue is most apparent on a cold start, not a restart. The cause for this false message is most often associated with a peripheral USB device, such as a USB hub that places just a sufficient extra load on the power supply and the fan fails to come up to speed quickly enough due to the extra load from the USB devices plugged into the computer, thus preventing the CPU fan from developing sufficient RPM (below 500 RPM). Keep in mind that most hardware, including fans, is made in China and a lot of this hardware is not of the best quality (Cheap). When the CPU fan fails to develop sufficient RPM quickly enough, the BIOS triggers the CPU FAN FAILUE MESSAGE AND SHUTS DOWN THE COMPUTER. This issue is especially associated with new HP/Compaq desktops. The CPU fan has to come up to speed quickly enough and produce at least 500 RPM, if the CPU fan is clocking at under 500 RPM, lets say, 450 to 475, there is a strong likelihood that the BIOS will trigger this message and shut down the computer. Obviously, once the fan is up to speed, the problem goes away. A good tes

I'm hoping someone can help me as I am totally at a loss as what to try next. Ok, so my mother bought a HP Slimline S5305Z desktop PC. Had it for several months with no problems. Then ocasionally when she would restart it she would get a"ERROR: CPU Fan Has Failed! PC will automatically power down in a few seconds. Service the PC immediately to prevent damage to the PC." She would restart it and no error. I opened it up to make sure the cpu fan connector was seated properly and it was. Finally she purchased a new desktop and gave me her old one. "Let the fun begin!"....So I brought it home, got everything hooked back up and commenced to using it on a daily basis. Well whenever I would need to restart it due to updates or whatever I would get the same cpu fan error but It went from occasionally to everytime it was restarted. Now whenever I need to restart it I have to blow on the cpu fan to keep it going in order to prevent it from showing the cpu fan error and shutting down. Not r
