the purpose of installing Ubuntu. It worked fine and I saw it next to the C drive so I turned of the computer and grabbed my USB with Ubuntu on (ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386) and I used LinuxLive to make the USB Ubuntu "ready" (LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.19) I got everything working and all but Then I was going to start my laptop again (The same one that I made a partition on) but after the Dell logo I got this Message: "GRUB Loading

stage1.5. GRUB loading, please wait... Error 15" I thought that it was strange that I couldn't boot my windows so I look in the boot options (F12 on my dell) but I could only find a Legacy boot list and other options, I couldn't choose which partition I wanted to boot so I tried to reboot the computer with my Ubuntu USB. FYI I didn't put anything on the new made partition, I've only tried Ubuntu in vmWare player. I got thru the setup and I choose to delete the 40gig partition I made and created a new one with Ubuntu. I thought everything was fine so I restarted the computer (when the setup told me to) and removed the usb. But then I booted my computer I still hade the same Error :/ boot grub2 partitioning share|improve this question edited Feb 4 '13 at 23:24 gertvdijk 38k1598171 asked Feb 4 '13 at 22:09 Oskar 113 1 Welcome to Ask Ubuntu! I'm running this existing distro http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/125323/grub-error-15-file-not-found (Ubuntu) from /dev/sdb with a new OS, Gentoo, installed on /dev/sda. I'm glad I took the trouble of setting these up on different disks because I can't boot into the new OS. All I get is grub error 15 "File not found". It also gives the UUID which I have verified is correct: sudo blkid /dev/sda1: LABEL="boot" UUID="b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5" TYPE="ext2" /dev/sda2: UUID="fc34999a-e85d-4c7b-8775-30510eb4c396" TYPE="swap" /dev/sda3: LABEL="main" UUID="65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd" TYPE="ext4" The menu.lst (on /dev/sdb) for the new OS is title Gentoo Linux 3.10.7-r1 uuid b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5 #root (hd0,0) kernel /kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd I also tried kernel /boot/kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd but since the UUID goes directly to the boot partition I think this is wrong. The kernel should be correct; if I mount dev/sda1 and ls I see grub kernel-3.10.7-gentoo Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? It might be very basic; I've only been using Linux for a few years and never Gentoo except for a few days in a chroot. I should mention I also have grub2 installed on dev/sda1 though I don't get as far there: it just shows the grub 'command line'. ub
DoctorBeaver I was installing Ubuntu from CD and we had a powercut while the installation was in progress. Now, http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-105437.html when I try to boot it says "Grub loading 1.5 please wait..." then a couple of seconds later I get "Error 15" and nothing else happens. I tried to install again https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56251 from scratch but although the CD drive is accessed I get exactly the same error. Basically, I'm stuffed. Any ideas? I've got USB memory sticks, an external hard drive, external CD/DVD error 15 drive (which I've tried but got the same error) and an SDHC memory card available if any of those could offer a solution. AftershockVibe You could try the steps here after booting from the install CD: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351 DoctorBeaver AftershockVibe wrote: You could try the steps here after booting from the install CD: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351 It won't boot from the install disk. With or without error 15 file the disk I get error 15. malcolmpreen I had a similar sounding problem a while back.... can't remember the exact error... but I know I couldn't boot from the hard disk, or the ubuntu install media. I was able to switch into debug mode (from grub I think.... but I'm not 100% sure) and that was suggesting that I had a problem which needed fscking.... Fine I thought.... if only I could boot somehow.... Anyway.... long story short.... I happened to have a Fedora 10 installation DVD.... I was able to boot that OK.... enter rescue mode.... and fsck the ubuntu disk.... following that... everything was good. For the record, my Ubuntu was 8.04 - if I remember I tried booting from 8.04 and 8.10 with no luck. Best of luck... in theory... assuming you have a way to get it.... any other distribution installation MIGHT be worth a go.... Malcolm DoctorBeaver Malcolm - thanks for that. I'll give it a try. Anything is worth a try because the PC is totally useless at the moment. AftershockVibe Sorry DoctorBeaver, I thought Quote: I tried to install

(I setup the partitions manually, not with the auto configure)So, I just mounted /dev/sda1 in archlive, and grub/menu.lst contains this:root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/3525ec64-d3dc-4bec-b9d2-172633f4a3a4 ro initrd /boot/kernel26.imgBut, I get this error message in grub:root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 Error 15: File not found Press any key to continue...Any ideas? I know it has to be something small...Also, a side question, why format /boot as ext2 instead of say something like ext3? What does ext2 have over ext3?♦ Last edited by Ek0nomik (2008-10-03 22:06:19) Offline #2 2008-10-03 18:30:26 Ek0nomik Member From: Wisconsin Registered: 2008-05-01 Posts: 7 Re: [SOLVED] Grub Error 15: File Not Found One more thing, when I go into grub and type:root (hd0,0)and root (hd0,1)they both return the same thing:Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83.Since one is ext2, and the other ext3, shouldn't it say something different?
