I installed ndiswrapper, I ran modprobe, and I got the famous error : FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper (/lib/modules/2.6.11-6mdksmp/misc/ndiswrapper.ko): Operation not permitted I ran ndiswrapper -e ndiswrapper.ko, and bingo! This solve the problem. modprobe ndiswrapper did not complain anymore, as a matter of fact, I am writing this messages using my wireless card. The machine is an HP laptop ZD7260. raxxal View Public Profile View LQ Blog View Revi
Using Electrik's instructions below, I got as far as step #10. When I type 'modprobe ndiswrapper', it comes back with FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper (/lib/modules/2.6.10-1.770FC3/misc/ndiswrapper.ko): Operation not permitted. I'm installing a Linksys WPC11 v4 on an IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop running FC3. Thanks much, TJ Elektrik's instructions from previous post: 1) Log in as root. 2) Install gcc. 3) Somehow get the latest ndiswrapper release on your system from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/ (ndiswrapper-0.8.tar.gz as of this post). The tar should fit on a floppy. 4) Extract ndiswrapper whereever you like. 5) Enter the directory where you extracted ndiswrapper in a terminal window. 6) Type 'make install' 7) Somehow get the latest rtl8180 Windows XP drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...Keyword=rtl8180 onto your system. You need the rtl8180.sys and net8180.inf files. Put these two files in any directory you want. 8) In your terminal, type 'ndiswrapper -i /path/to/net8180.inf' 9) Type 'ndiswrapper -l' and make sure net8180 is present. 10) Type 'modprobe ndiswrapper' 11) Type 'iwconfig' and make sure there is a wireless device present, usually it will be recognized at 'wlan0' 12) Type 'ifconfig wlan0 up' 13) Type 'ndiswrapper -m' 14) Type '/usr/bin/internet-druid' to open your Internet Configuration Wizard. Ok, so Novell SuSE 10 will recognize my wireless card, but it won't connect wirelessly! So, I was following the instructions error inserting ndiswrapper given here: http://nextgen.no-ip.org/~andrew/lin...pperinfo10.php, and when I do: "modprobe ndiswrapper" I get error message that says: FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper (/lib/modules/2.6.13-15-defualt/extra/ndiswrapper.ko): Operation not permitted" I have no clue why this is not working. I am doing it by the recommended YaST method. I have Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG integrated card. HELP! I really need this notebook connected to the internet. The last 3 words from the error (Operation not permitted) that you posted leads me to beleive that you are running it as a user and not root. To run modporbes you will need to have root access to the kernel. I haven't read the instructions that you posted a link to, but in the past when I have done a modprobe, some of the steps were as a user, but the final modprobe was always as root. Reread your instructions and see if it doesn't mention somewhere about running this or that step as root.
