I am a newcomer to Linux, error inserting but an advanced Windows user. I am running Puppy 2.02 on an outdated desktop. Both during the initial install and running the ALSA wizard subsequently, the onboard sound chipset is found and identified as a via82. The wizard reports that the sound has been configured, but when it plays the test sound, nothing comes out. I have noticed a number of error inserting snd_ac97_codec error messages while the wizard is running, and at boot up each time. The error messages are as follows: WARNING: Error inserting snd_rawmidi (/lib/modules/2.6.16.7/sound/core/snd-rawmidi.ko): Invalid module format WARNING: Error inserting snd_mpu401_uart (/lib/modules/2.6.16.7/sound/drivers/mpu401/snd-mpu401-uart.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) WARNING: Error inserting snd_timer (/lib/modules/2.6.16.7/sound/core/snd-timer.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) WARNING: Error inserting snd_pcm (/lib/modules/2.6.16.7/sound/core/snd-pcm.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) WARNING: Error inserting snd_ac97_codec (/lib/modules/2.6.16.7/sound/pci/ac97/snd-ac97-codec.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) FATAL: Error inserting snd_via82xx (/lib/modules/2.6.16.7/sound/pci/snd-via82xx.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) When I look at the snd-via82xx.ko file in the directory, it shows up as a text file rather than an executable driver. When I click on it, a text editor opens and this is what is displayed: /* * untitled.* * * Copyright 2006 root
about a month, and only a couple of days ago discovered that it wouldn't work for my Dell. (Aparently the intersection between Dell users and Linux users is smaller than I thought.) Fortunately, the new updated ALSA driver was just released, so hopefully that should fix the problem... Except now I'm having new troubles. Since it's actually the correct driver this time, I'm lost. The problem may simply be I don't know what I"m doing, but any help would be appreciated. I run ./configure --with-cards=emu10k1x --with-sequencer=yes;make;make install for the driver and ./configure;make;make install for alsa-lib and alsa-utils, per instructions. As far as I can tell that part is working fine; I'm certainly not getting the error messages I got when I was trying to install emu10k1. However, when I run /sbin/modprobe snd-emu10k1x, I get: WARNING: Error inserting snd (/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358smp/kernel/sound/acore/snd.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) WARNING: Error inserting snd_ac97_codec (/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358smp/kernel/sound/pci/ac97/snd-ac97-codec.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) WARNING: Error inserting snd_timer (/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358smp/kernel/sound/acore/snd-timer.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) WARNING: Error inserting snd_pcm (/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358smp/kernel/sound/acore/snd-pcm.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) FATAL: Error inserting snd_emu10k1x (/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358smp/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1x.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) dmesg gives me: rt: freeing divert_blk for eth0 ip_tables: (C) 2000-2002 Netfilter core team ip_conntrack version 2.1 (4091 buckets, 32728 max) - 300 bytes per conntrack e100: Intel(R) PRO/100 Network Driver, 3.0.17 e100: Copyright(c) 1999-2004 Intel Corporation divert: allocating divert_blk for eth0 e100: eth0: e100_probe: addr 0xfcfef000, irq 209, MAC addr 00:07:E9:70:56:AB e100: eth0: e100_watchdog: link up, 10Mbps, full-duplex parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778) [PCSPP,TRISTATE] parport0: irq 7 detected lp0: using parport0 (polling). lp0: console ready eth0: no IPv6 routers present snd: Unknown symbol unregister_sound_special snd: Unknown symbol register_sound_special repeat for about 200 lines snd_ac97_codec: Unknown symbol snd_info_register snd_ac97_codec: Unknown symbol snd_ctl_add snd_ac97_codec: Unknown symbol snd_compat_kcalloc snd_ac97_codec: Unknown symbol snd_info_free_e
