The update downloads without any issue, and I have over 1 GB of space free. I am currently facing the issue with the iOS 5.1.1 update. Screenshot of error below. I faced this issue with the 5.1 update as well, and ended up using iTunes for the update. I have the 16 GB wifi model of the iPad 2. Restarting the iPad doesn't help either. My 3rd gen iPod touch has no issues with the OTA updates. This seems to be a common problem, and people have faced it on different devices as well. No one seems to have found a foolproof solution so far on the net. Is there any fix for this, as the iTunes route is a much heavier download. ipad ios software-update share|improve this question edited May 12 '12 at 5:52 asked May 12 '12 at 5:31 ab.aditya 10114 1 Does this iPad happen to be jailbroken? OTA updates always fail on jailbroken devices (they need to be restored/updated via iTunes instead). –britta May 12 '12 at 12:08 @britta Nope, not jailbroken. –ab.aditya May 12 '12 at 19:59 FWIW, I finally managed to install an OTA update (6.0.1) after a spate of iTunes based updates. The only difference this time was that I was connected to a proper wifi point rather than tethered through my phone. –ab.aditya Nov 28 '12 at 17:38 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote -1 down vote if you download updates very soon after Apple releases them, they can sometimes get corrupted because the server is sending you the individual packages at the same time as it it send them to many other people. You may just need to wait a while and try again. share|improve this answer edited Jun 20 '12 at 19:39 patrix♦ 34.9k1072103 answered Jun 20 '12 at 18:55 alexrider2014 1 Weird idea of how servers work. time out, not start at all, or sometimes throw an error message saying "Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update." or "The network connection could not be established." If you're having trouble downloading iOS 5.1 from Apple's servers, try these fixes: Reset Network Settings on iOS Device: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings Clear Hosts File: Look at your hosts file for anything blocking Apple's servers and comment them out, this is mostly relevant to jailbreakers and if you see "Error 3194" Change http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/51143/how-to-resolve-the-unable-to-install-update-error-for-ota-ios-updates DNS Servers: Adjusting DNS on either the computer you are downloading from or iOS device if using OTA can resolve the issue, instructions on how to do so are below Changing DNS seems to be the most reliable method, here is how to do so in iOS and OS X. Changing DNS in iOS Tap on Settings, tap on "Wi-Fi", and tap on the blue arrow next to the router http://osxdaily.com/2012/03/09/cant-download-ios-5-1-try-these-fixes/ name Under "DHCP" tab tap on "DNS" and replace with: "8.8.8.8" for Google DNS, or "208.67.222.222" for OpenDNS Tap the Back button and attempt to use OTA again Change DNS in OS X Open System Preferences from the Apple menu Click on "Network" and then click on ‘Advanced' in the lower right corner Click the "DNS" tab and then add a new DNS server by clicking the "+" icon, adding either "8.8.8.8" for Google DNS or "208.67.222.222" for OpenDNS Drag the newly added DNS server to the top of the list, click "OK" then close out of System Preferences On a Mac you may need to follow this up with flushing DNS cache, so open the Terminal and type the following: dscacheutil -flushcache Now try opening iTunes and updating, or try to download iOS 5.1 firmware directly from Apple again. An unrelated but pleasant side effect of changing DNS can be that your wi-fi speeds increase, give it a try and let us know if it works for you. Thanks to Aygie and Sayed for the DNS tips!
