to share it myself and just recently saw it once again at a customer, who experienced the problem. This blog post will cover how to install and the Exchange https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2784788 Rollup Update successfully without getting the “Ended prematurely” error. The Setup Wizard for Update Rollup fails with the error “ended prematurely”. It has been the same issue for Update Rollups for both Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010. The installer fails with the information: Setup Wizard for Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (KB2917508) ended prematurely because https://www.msdigest.net/2014/03/setup-wizard-for-exchange-update-rollup-ended-prematurely/ of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, please run the installation again. The screen dump below also shows what error look like: The reason for the error and why the Update Rollup installer is “ended prematurely” is because the server has User Access Control (UAC) activated on the server. For good reason, it is not recommended to disable the UAC. The error is also shown in the event log, as Event ID: 1024 and with error code 1603. How to Install the Update Rollup The recommended process for installing Update Rollups on the server, is using an elevated command prompt (Open a CMD with Run As Administrator) and make sure the Update Rollup is located on a local drive of the server and start the installer using: SYNTAX example: msiexec /update
2007/2010 Update Rollups Posted on April 20, 2010 by Jan Egil Ring Have you http://blog.powershell.no/2010/04/20/installing-exchange-server-20072010-update-rollups/ ever tried to install an Exchange Server Update Rollup which ended with an error message? I recently did some troubleshooting on installing http://www.expta.com/2012/08/exchange-2010-sp2-roll-up-4-does-not.html Exchange Server 2010 Update Rollup 3 and picked up some experiences I would like to share, in addition to provide some general exchange 2010 guidelines for installing Exchange Update Rollups. The installation may fail when installing either manually by downloading the installation package or by using Windows Update. Afterwards event 1024 are logged to the application log stating that the installation failed with the error code 1603: This exchange 2010 sp3 really doesnt help much, and in addition to the failed installation all Exchange-related services are now stopped and disabled, leaving the server offline.
Start by restoring the service-state. First, enable and start Windows Management Service using an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:
Get-Service Winmgmt | Set-Service –StartupType Automatic; Get-Service Winmgmt | Start-Service
Then run the ServiceControl.ps1 located in the Exchange bin-folder and the pass it the argument “AfterPatch”:
The server should now be restored to an operational state. Next, download the Exchange Update Rollup if you havent done that in the first installation attempt. Next, retry the installation from the elevated PowerShell promt using msiexec with the /lv parameter: msiexec /lv c:tempex-ur3-install.log /update C:tempExchange2010-KB981401-x64-en.msp This will instruct the Windows Installer servic
Not Install - Error Code 1603 Tuesday, August 21, 2012 Event 1024 MSiInstaller - Error code 1603 Update: Microsoft is asking customers who are having this issue to open a support case with Microsoft Technical Support. They see random support calls related to this going back to Exchange 2007, but want to reproduce theissue with customers currently seeing this issue with Exchange 2010 SP2 UR4. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319726for MTS phone numbers in your area. I had an interesting problem installing Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 4 (UR4) on servers that have never had issues installing updatesbefore. When I tried to install SP2 UR4 on the Edge Transport or typical installation servers it would rollback the installation and log the following error in the application log: Product: Microsoft Exchange Server - Update 'Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2 (KB2706690) 14.2.318.2' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with installing software packages. Normally this issue us fixed by installing the Update Rollup from an elevated CMD prompt (see http://blog.c7solutions.com/2011/03/exchange-2010-update-rollups-and-error.html), but this time it still wasn't working. I enabled MSI Installer logging as per http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23127and dived into the setup logs. I found the following error being logged in the ServiceControl.log: [19:51:28] [Error] System.Management.Automation.ParseException: At C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Scripts\ManageScheduledTask.ps1:462 char:5 + return $success + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Control cannot leave a finally block. at System.Management.Automation.Internal.PipelineProcessor.SynchronousExecuteEnumerate(Object input, Hashtable errorResults, Boolean enumerate) at System.Management.Automation.PipelineOps.InvokePipeline(Object input, Boolean ignoreInput, CommandParameterInternal[][] pipeElements, CommandBaseAst[] pipeElementAsts, CommandRedirection[][] commandRedirections, FunctionContext funcContext) at System.Management.Automation.Interpreter.ActionCallInstruction`6.Run(InterpretedFrame frame) at System.Management.Automation.Interpreter.EnterTryCatchFinallyInstruction.Run(InterpretedFrame frame) at System.Management.Automation.Interpreter.EnterTryCatchFinallyInstruction
