I'm using Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3. Both servers are 2008 R2 64 bit. Exchange is setup in a DAG connected by a high speed WAN link. Backup Exec is set to backup the active (local) copy on the primary site. Exchange shows mailbox databases are healthy and mounted. There are several mailboxes within my DAG, but 1 consistently fails to backup (MailDB) The message on Exchange I get in the event logs are (The previous mail backup attempt occurred 24hrs ago): An attempt to prepare the database 'MailDB' for backup failed because the database is already in the process of being backed up. The error code is -2403. (Note that if a backup was recently aborted, then it may take several minutes for the system to detect the aborted ba

There is no other backup software on these systems, and is most prevalent on Exchange 2010. The size exchange 2010 of the Exchange stores do not appear to make a difference. Reboots of the Exchange server do resolve the issue for a couple of days, but is by no means a long term solution. Has anyone got any ideas how to stop these from occuring, whilst still backing up the stores? Both of the following are captured when the backup finishes: Event ID: 9702 User (If Applicable): N/A Computerxxxx.xxxxxx Event Description: Exchange VSS Writer (instance exchange 2010 vss d45e186a-8f75-4151-8f63-0a0dc579e566:42) failed with error code 1295 when processing the post-snapshot event. TECHNOLOGY IN THIS DISCUSSION Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Join the Community! Creating your account only takes a few minutes. Join Now A few days ago we had some backup jobs on our Exchange 2007 fail. Since then we cannot backup any of our databases. When we run the command below we can see that almost all of the 10 databases on the server are still marked as having a backup in progress: get-MailboxDatabase –Status | format-table Name,StorageGroup, BackupInProgress We have seen 3 solutions for this from MS, Symantec, and others. Dismount and Mount the databases Restart the Information store Use VSSAdmin to check for and delete shadow copies. We get an error trying to dismount the databases and the Event Viewer indicates that a backup is still in progress so we cannot get option 1 done. When trying to use VSSAdmin to find and delete any problem shadow copies the VSSAdmin command tells me that the shadow copy could not be found even when I ask to delete all so we cannot do option 3. The last thing I can try is bouncing the box or restarting the IS (option 2). Is there any other way to get the databases out of this state where they think they are being backed up without restarting the server or taking down the IS and databases? I am very wary of restarting the IS for fear of having to perform a hard rebuild on any of these very large DBs. About a month ago we tried to bounce the box for some other issue and it took 6 hours to get all but one large DB online and about 24 hours more to get that last one online. I inherited this horrible horrible enviroment a couple of months ago and just need it to hold on for a little while longer until we move to Office 360. Have considered restarting the Exchange server replication service? In some cases that can recycle the vss writer and clear the backup-in-progress state. 0 Anaheim OP Jordan Nolan Jan 26, 2013 at 4:49 UTC Just gave that a shot, but get-MailboxDat
