is well-known, but I never got around to share it myself and just recently saw it once again at a customer, who experienced the problem. This blog post https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2784788 will cover how to install and the Exchange Rollup Update successfully without getting the “Ended prematurely” error. The Setup Wizard for Update Rollup fails with the error “ended prematurely”. It has been the same issue for Update Rollups for both Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010. The installer fails with the information: Setup Wizard for Update Rollup https://www.msdigest.net/2014/03/setup-wizard-for-exchange-update-rollup-ended-prematurely/ 5 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (KB2917508) ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, please run the installation again. The screen dump below also shows what error look like: The reason for the error and why the Update Rollup installer is “ended prematurely” is because the server has User Access Control (UAC) activated on the server. For good reason, it is not recommended to disable the UAC. The error is also shown in the event log, as Event ID: 1024 and with error code 1603. How to Install the Update Rollup The recommended process for installing Update Rollups on the server, is using an elevated command prompt (Open a CMD with Run As Administrator) and make sure the Update Rollup is located on a local drive of the server and start the installer using: SYNTAX example: msiexec /update

Do you mean I need to extract the files locally and run the setup in command line? Reply Brian Reid says: March 15, 2011 at 10:00 am No, you just need to start the Command Prompt as an administrator. That is right-click the Command Prompt shortcut and choose Run As exchange 2010 sp3 Administrator. From here you need to just run the MSI download - nothing else to do. If you run the download with /quiet at the end then there really is nothing else to do. Reply Anonymous says: August 21, 2012 at 4:01 pm thank you! Reply Anonymous says: April 25, 2013 at 8:54 pm Simple and stupid (that it's necessary) and oddly undocumented anywhere in MS support collateral. Thanks lifting the kilt on this one. Thomas Nielsen, Sept 2013: "I know this is a old post, but this solution also solved my issue installing Exchange SP3 Rollup 2 :-)" Diem Silvan, Aug 2013: "Wow - works fine now : Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup 8 Thanks a lot!!!" Jerry Locke, May 2013: "Wow, that's amazingly stupid behavior on the part of the patch installer. Even stupider that it's not properly documented over two years later. Thanks for the tip, I can verify it working correctly for Update Rollup 1 on Exchange 2010 SP3 (KB2803727). Strangely, this is the first time I've encountered this particular behavior, previous rollups have worked fine" Frits Luten, May 2013: "The other option is to set the UAC (temporarely) to nothing … after that you can install the Rollup w
