"Could Not Lock File" error. The rest of us do not have this problem. Can anyone tell me how to correct this? Is the problem in the person's security or configuration of Access or in the database? Thanks. dfriend846,

If they were the first (only?) user then there was no problem but if they logged on as a multiple user the program could not create a lock file since they did not have write priveleges. When changed to allow ldb file write priveleges the problem went away. dfriend846, Oct 2, 2005 #2 Adeyan Joined: Jan 4, 2007 Messages: 9 Thanks, exactly what i was looking for Adeyan, Jan 4, 2007 #3 glisando Joined: Jun 1, 2007 Messages: 15 I am having the same problem in my workplace too. I just took over the admistration of the database recently. There is a user who always gets the 'could not lock file' error Is giving them 'write' privellages the only way to solve this problem? What if that particular user is not supposed to do any editing of the data, and I end up giving him 'WRITE' privellages? Could it be something to do with the registry settings of the user's notebook/PC? I managed to get some info from this site : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305995 Could anyone confirm that the method suggested by the above mentioned link will solve the problem? Thanks. regards glisando glisando, Jun 1, 2007 #4 dfriend846 Thread Starter Joined: Aug 11, 2005 Messages: 199 Hello Glisando, I'm sorry but I cannot confirm that the other method will work. In my 2005 note I referred to the Write priveleges of the folder on the network. There are ways to prevent people with Write priveleges from altering data. In my case the users access the data via forms and those who should not change the data use forms where the fields cannot be edited. None of this

It is on a network file server and is accessed via network shares. There is a current group of users who have been successfully accessing it simultaneously; some using Windows 2000 Pro/Office 2000 and some using Windows XP Pro/Office 2003. I am now adding 2 new users, 1 2000 Pro/Offc 2000 + 1 XP Pro/Offc 2003, who each get the 'cannot lock file' message if anyone of the original not lock file group is using the database, otherwise they can access the file. Further if either of the 2 new users log on first, any of the original users can use the database but only as read-only. Both original and new users all have the same NTFS permissions to the database and folders on the network. Any help to solve this will be most appreciated. 0 Question by:WoodstockIT Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 77 Best Solution bypeter57r Consider it like this. If an existing user can create and delete a Word doc in the database folder and a new user cannot do the same, the problem is with user permissions. Since this is not the installation default it is very unlikely to be so. I have just put a Microsoft Access file onto a network drive here at work. When one of the users opens the file (the others haven't tried yet) she gets the following error pop up... "Could not lock file". I've heard this could be a permissions issue so went in and gave all of the users full-control within that folder. I then had the user with the error restart. Again, the same thing. Any ideas? When a database is shared, and a user goes to open it. Access will lock the database so if another user connects they wont be able to conflict in their work. Her problem doesnt reside in opening it, her error resides in locking it after she opens it. So, either the permissions on the database are incorrect, or the permissions in the folder are incorrect.... Will you post a copy of the database? And I will test it. www.google.com - Pay Tribute. I think the problem was in the permissions. The 4 users did not have full access to the drive. One person got in
