Solved How do I fix Microsoft Access 'Cannot Lock File' error Posted on 2009-03-19 MS Access Server Hardware Active Directory 1 Verified Solution 6 Comments 3,627 Views Last Modified: 2013-11-29 I have an existing Microsoft Access 2000 database that is split with front end/back end. It is on a network file server and is lock file accessed via network shares. There is a current group of users who have been successfully accessing it simultaneously; some using Windows 2000 Pro/Office 2000 and some using Windows XP Pro/Office 2003. I am now adding 2 new users, 1 2000 Pro/Offc 2000 + 1 XP Pro/Offc 2003, who each get the 'cannot lock file' message if anyone of the original group is using the database, otherwise they can access the file. Further if either of the 2 new users log on first, could not lock any of the original users can use the database but only as read-only. Both original and new users all have the same NTFS permissions to the database and folders on the network. Any help to solve this will be most appreciated. 0 Question by:WoodstockIT Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 77 Best Solution bypeter57r Consider it like this. If an existing user can create and delete a Word doc in the database folder and a new user cannot do the same, the problem is with user permissions. " No they don't. Absolutely 99.9% guaranteed. The only other possibility is that the new users have their default database open mode set to exclusive. Since this is not the installation default it is very unlikely to be so. Then with everyone out of the app, make sure there are no .LDB files hanging about (if so, delete them).

I have just put a Microsoft Access file onto a network drive here at work. When one of the users opens the file (the others haven't tried yet) she gets the following error pop up... "Could not lock file". I've heard this could be a permissions issue so went in and gave all of the users full-control within that folder. I then had the user with the error restart. Again, the same thing. Any ideas? When a database is shared, and a user goes to open it. Access will lock the database so if another user connects they wont be able to conflict in their work. Her problem doesnt reside in opening it, her error resides in locking it after she opens it. So, either the permissions on the database are incorrect, or the permissions in the folder are incorrect.... Will you post a copy of the database? And I will test it. www.google.com - Pay Tribute.
