the 45 seconds to 1 minute mark. It really looks like it's too busy to finish the job. Error is recoverable. No action is taken and next snapshot can succeed. I watched the server during a snapshot to see if resources are an issue but there was no spike in resources that was obvious to me. Dell says microsoft exchange writer retryable error its a Microsoft VSS issue but our VSS backups using Netbackup have no problem. They don't overlap, by the way. Can Microsoft VSS be tweaked if I'm getting a timeout error on Microsoft Exchange Writer? thanks, rudif Edited by rudi f Friday, May 30, 2014 4:39 PM Friday, May 30, 2014 4:38 PM Reply | Quote Answers 0 Sign in to vote Are you running two different backup applications to protect Exchange? if so you are going to have issues since if both are compliant they will both be attempting to truncate logs and it just turns into a messSearch, Recover, & Extract Mailboxes, Folders, & Email Items from Offline Exchange Mailbox and Public Folder EDB's and Live Exchange Servers or Import/Migrate direct from Offline EDB to Any Production Exchange Server, even cross version i.e. 2003 --> 2007 --> 2010 --> 2013 with Lucid8's DigiScope

writer ID but are loaded by two different services. The first is the Exchange Information Store VSS writer and the microsoft exchange writer waiting for completion second is the Exchange Replication Service VSS writer. The Information Store writer allows for the backup of active / mounted databases and the replication service writer allows for the backup of passive databases https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/d8d8d054-6feb-41da-9960-9cd3820f3b34/microsoft-exchange-writer-state-9-failed-last-error-timed-out?forum=exchange2010 (should a replicated database model be utilized). You can see the writers by running the command VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS from a command prompt. Here is a sample put of a VSSAdmin List Writers from a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server with Exchange 2010 SP1. Note how both writers share the same writer ID within the VSS framework. When an Exchange backup job fails the VSS framework aborts the backup and subsequently Exchange clears the backup in progress settings. When a failure is encountered either a single Exchange writer or both Exchange writers maybe left in a FAILED RETRYABLE state. We can utilize VSSAdmin List Writers again to query the writer status and see these results. Here is an example showing the Exchange Replication Service writer with a status 8 FAILED last error RETRYABLE. Then, I migrated all 18(!) users from 2007 to 2010.From that moment on, the first backup always failed on microsoft exchange VSS, but the first retry always went okay. So, not really a big problem. However, after several days backups started failing on VSS completely. So, I rebooted the machine and the backup went okay once. So, several days later I rebooted once more and the backup kept failing. I retried a gazillion times and the millionth time the backup went okay again. Now, two days in a row the backup went microsoft exchange writer okay the first time (without retry)... And now it's failing completely (on VSS) again.Rebooting the machine or restarting Exchange sevices sometimes helps, but mostly it doesn't help. So, in 1% of the cases the backup goes okay and 99% it fails...This is really annoying me. I also tried increasing the memory assigned to Exchange, I read that somewhere on the internet, but that didn't help either. The host machine is really very powerful and only hosts a handful of VM's.The error reported by Veeam is:"Freezing guest operating systemUnfreeze error: [Backup job failed.
