One thing you might try is loading the recovery console and from there rename the existing file. ren c:\windows\system32\ntdll.dll ntdll.bad and run chkdsk /r on the drive while you are there. Error Message : Incorrect Function" Jbasto, Feb 7, 2007 #3 Rollin' Rog Joined: Dec 9, 2000 Messages: 45,855 This is a reinstall right? And you still have access to Windows? First, is this a retail or OEM XP CD you are using? If not, that might be the problem. But this looks like it might be an issue with 3rd party CD or burning software drivers or settings. Follow the instructions in the link below to delete upper and lower filter values in the registry and reboot. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311755&Product=winxp However I'm a little concerned that the registry location they give for this editing may be incorrect; the key may not exist. If it doesn't, or doesn't work, try my instructions here (up to item 5): http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/496789-solved-trying-load-disc.html#post3950306 Rollin' Rog, Feb 7, 2007 #4 james174 Joined: Aug 29, 2007 Messages: 2 I had exactly the same problem, but I found work around which installed windows absolutey fine. Follow these steps for a fix: 1. Make an ISO image of the windows disk you have 2. Open the ISO image in a ISO browser e.g Magic ISO Maker 3. Navigate to x:\I386\system32\ (x:\ is your HDD where the image was made) 4. Get the latest copy of the ntdll.dl

Hardware related issues Defective EIDE/IDE cable. Verify your computer doesn't have a defective EIDE/IDE cable by swapping your current cable with a known good one, or purchasing a new one. Another EIDE/IDE device on the cable as hard drive Other devices that are on the same cable as an EIDE/IDE hard drive have been known to cause this issue (this includes zip drives, CD, DVD, and burners). To help verify this is not the cause of your issue temporarily disconnect any device on the same cable as the hard drive. If this does resolve your issue the device may need updated drivers or firmware update, may be incompatible (try using on the other EIDE/IDE cable, may not have jumpers set properly, or may be bad. Drivers Improper or out-of-date drivers can also cause this error. Verify that you have the latest motherboard, CD, DVD, zip drive, other disk drive drivers. Ok first off I tried installing Windows Vista Home Premium on my new 24in iMac and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2170988?tstart=0 after installation had problems installing drivers. Found out it was because I had a 64 bit version of Vista and the iMacs dont support that. Then I got a copy of XP Home Service Pack 3 from a friend http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/84893-45-unknown-hard-error-systemrootsystem32ntdll to try. Im not sure if it is 32 or 64 bit but I was going to try it anyways. Its starts to extract the files and get ready for the install but not long after it does that unknown hard it gives me an unknown error and the blue screen of death."STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll"Does anyone know what this means? I would really like to get one of them installed. I dont care which one...if anyone knows how I can put a 64bit version of Vista on my iMac that would probably be best since it installed fine and just messed up when installing the drivers. Otherwise can anyone tell me what to do about this unknown hard error unknown error? Or do I need to search around for yet another operating system cd?Any help will be greatly appreciated. 24in iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.1), 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 640 GB HD Posted on Sep 21, 2009 8:09 PM I have this question too Close Q: Unknown Hard Error when installing Windows XP?
