My network connection and windows firewall have suddenly gone inoperative. I am on a Dell Dimension 4400 in a university office windows firewall on a university LAN, running WinXP SP2. Here are the symptoms, and solutions that have not worked: 1. Used a different computer in the same office on my port, the port works fine. 2. Swapped out network cable for a new cable, network still doesn't work. 3. Swapped out network card for brand new network card, still have internet connection sharing the same problem. 4. The 10Mbps light on the new card is on, and the ACT light is on and flashing. Both are green. 5. In "Network Connections" in Control Panel, the Local Area Connection Status is "Connected" at "10Mbps". Packets sent and received are both zero. However, the "Address Type", "IP Address", "Subnet Mask", and "Default Gateway" fields are all blank. If I hit "Repair", I get the following message: "Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed. For assistance, contact the person who manages your network." 6. If I attempt to ping another computer in cmd line, I get the following error: "Unable to contact IP driver, error code 2" 7. The windows firewall will not turn on. If I hit "Enable", I get the following message: "We're sorry. The Security Center cannot turn on Windows Firewall. To try turning on the firewall yourself, go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel. In the Windows Firewall dialog General tab, select On (recommended), and then click OK." If I
