Making sense of the Correlation ID in SharePoint 2010. Have you encountered an error that looks like this screenshot below? Well, if you develop items in SharePoint, then most probably you have seen that not just once but a lot of times unless you are a really good developer that does not commit any mistakes. Now you are presented with a GUID without any other information so you might be wondering what the hell that means, so you Google your problem and seesome solutions on how to determine what that Correlation ID means by going to the server and in this folder location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS and voila! You see a ton of logs that SharePoint had generated over time. You then open t

Wouldn't it have been nice if instead of having to go through all of that log searching I could have just gotten a message like this:So, the first thing I do in my development environment is configure a few items in the web.config so that I get real error messages on the page. Please make sure that you do NOT use these settings in production, because aside from not wanting end users to see the hideous yellow and red error message and stack trace, these settings cause a good bit of overhead and will slow down your site unnecessarily. I downloaded a zip file called LyteBoxForSharePoint and uploaded the webpart using add a web part function. Now I am getting errors. The good thing is, that it's only my dept page. The bad thing is I have no clue what happened. All other pages beside the dept landing page is working. So, I am guessing it's only the landing page that has the issue. Is there a way to find out what code was added or to revert to old code. The error I get is the following, and it keeps on changing every time I refresh the page. An unexpected error has occurred.
