June 9, 2009 Update: Holy shit, it's stopped. I re-ran the same experiments a few times over the course of the day to try things that people suggested (for example, using the IP address instead of the name "testserv.mydomain.com" -- which comcast error 14 made no difference, incidentally), and my results were the same every time. Just now, I comcast error code 7 tried again, and the traffic makes it from ‘homemachine' to ‘testserv' completely unadulterated. Now all you frenzied slashdotters can tell me I imagined apdl comcast error the whole thing. Let's see if it lasts… [original post left for posterity] We all know about the annoying DNS tricks folks like Comcast play, right? The ones where you mistype a site name and you end up https://customer.xfinity.com/help-and-support/cable-tv/x1-errorcode-xre-00022-err-53 on an annoying advertising page because their DNS server resolves it to their own server? Well, it's worse than you think. See, some people are actually savvy enough to simply not use Comcast's DNS servers so they don't get this obnoxious behavior. But Comcast has put a stop to that, at least for some people. (Full disclosure: I don't know if it's Comcast or Earthlink that's responsible for this behavior, but Comcast is who I pay https://comcastisfuckingwithyourport53traffic.wordpress.com/ for internet access, so I'm blaming them for now, even though it's obvious Earthlink is involved). What they actually do is to take any UDP traffic bound for port 53 on any server and redirect it to their own server. This means that you simply can't use a different DNS server, even if you have one. Here's a little experiment I did to prove it. There are three computers involved: "testserv.mydomain.com" is a Slicehost machine I have for various experiments (note: actual domain is not mydomain.com, of course). "homemachine" is my laptop, sitting at home and connecting via Fucking Comcast. "okok" is a machine which is elsewhere (doesn't matter where other than to say it's not connected via Goddamn Comcast). All of these machines are running Ubuntu linux (Hardy, in case you care). Step 1: Start a fake DNS server on testserv: On the server, run the following command: testserv$ sudo nc -l -p 53 -u | od -hc This listens for UDP packets on port 53, which is where DNS requests will show up, and it prints them to stdout after piping them through ‘od' so the binary garbage doesn't hose up my terminal. Step 2: Test it from a known good computer ("okok") On the "good" machine ("good" in this case means it is not using comcast), run this command: okok$ nslookup comcast.sucks.com testserv.mydoma

I have Comcast and live about 40 miles south of Boston. It was a nice plan, except for the past week we can't get the Roamio to work. It seems we've narrowed the issue down to the Cisco CableCard which seems to accept the "pings" but otherwise fails to load the channels that I'm entitled to receive. As a result, I'm left with V53 errors on every channel. I'm on my fourth cable card, I've had two techs to the house, run the guided setup half a dozen times, and had probably a dozen calls each to both Comcast and Tivo technical support. Over the objections of the tech support, Tivo now has a new Roamio Plus on the way, being that's really the only variable that hasn't been changed at this point. We tried hooking the Tivo directly to the pole with no spitters. It should be noted Signal is in the high 90's and SNR were deemed to be really good. And as one would expect, Tivo points the finger at Comcast and Comcast says this is Tivo's fault, with the last Comcast Tier 2 tech suggesting this is a 20.3.x firmware issue. (My firmware version is 20.3.7.1a-USA-6-848) I don't know much about CableCards, but here's the info they always ask for, along with what the Tivo techs think is the issue (Active Programs and the lack of a program index): CableCard CA Screen > Status: "Ready" CableCard CA Screen > Active Programs: "No Information Avai

The problem turned out to be a bad cable to the house and a bad connector inside. Have your wiring tested. __________________ 3TB 4-Tuner Bolt with 1st year free service on OTA antenna 3TB 6-tuner Roamio Pro All-in on Comcast Cablecard 6TB (WD Red) 4-tuner Roamio OTA All-In on OTA antenna 6xMini2s JTHOJNICKI View Public Profile Find More Posts by JTHOJNICKI Add JTHOJNICKI to Your Ignore List 04-24-2016, 01:36 PM #3 tybo971 Registered User Join Date: Apr 2016 Posts: 13 It's only done it 1 time in 3 weeks so we shall see.... tybo971 View Public Profile Find More Posts by tybo971 Add tybo971 to Your Ignore List Forum Jump User Control Panel Private Messages Subscriptions Who's Online Search Forums Forums Home Main TiVo Forums TiVo Coffee House - TiVo Discussion TiVo Help Center TiVo Suggestion Avenue TiVo Bolt
