Posted on 2008-09-04 Programming Languages-Other Windows Server 2003 1 Verified Solution 6 Comments 7,801 Views Last Modified: 2013-11-25 I have several Windows 2003 servers running a home-grown service and two running SQL 2000. The OSs are patched to SP1 and SQL is patched https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/23703673/Why-is-DCOM-trying-to-start-Wuauserv-if-Auto-Updates-is-disabled.html to SP4. By intention, Automatic Updates are disabled so why is DCOM attampting to open wuauserv? I get the following error intermittently throughout my system event logs: 09/02/2008 14:00:20 Log Name: System Message Source: DCOM Event ID: 10005 User: - Event Message DCOM got error "%1058" attempting to start the service wuauserv with arguments "" in order to run the server: {E60687F7-01A1-40AA-86AC-D

"DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service wuauserv with arguments "" in order to run the server: {E60687F7-01A1-40AA-86AC-DB1CBF673334}" I don't understand why winxp would want to start the service wuauserv when I've stopped "auto updates" under control panel/administrative tools/services. I have also checked "Turn off automatic updates" under Control Panel/ System/Autoupdates. Other than the annoying DCOM error messages, my pc seems to be okay in terms of speed. I'm using winxp SP3. But I'm not sure whether I should just ignore the DCOM errors or try to get rid of them. Any help would be much appreciated. I've googled for several days without success. Thank you. Larry Larry, Jul 28, 2008 #1 Advertisements Gerry Guest Larry You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive an "Error 1058" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896224 -- Hope this helps.
