To be more clear, Merge Agent is able to download snapshot file necessary to apply newly added article (scalar funciton in my case), but then, all of a sudden, it show the error. Here is a part of the log: The request message was sent to "https://www.milbros.com/DBSynch/replisapi.dll" Downloaded a total of 5 chunks. Downloaded snapshot file "Carrier_Default_2.sch". The response message was received from "https://www.milbros.com/DBSynch/replisapi.dll" and is being processed. The changes contained in the message downloaded from Publisher "MIL-WEB01" will be applied after having collected and displayed the upload statistics. The windows account your using as the Distribution Agent should be the only one that can READ. Your Snapshot Agent needs to be able to "WRITE" to the file share where your storing the snapshot otherwise your going to get an error.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms151151.aspx Post #468279 Mohan KumarMohan Kumar Posted Wednesday, March 12, 2008 2:28 PM Ten Centuries Group: General Forum Members Last Login: Wednesday, October 29, 20

The subscribing server is at another site and is connected via a VPN tunnel. The serverName is resolvable via the hosts file. I am trying to capture the existing configuration precisely, but clearly am missing something. The error is The process could not read file '\\[server]\repldata\unc\[folder]\[folder]\[file].pre' due to OS error 5. I can RDP into the subscribing server with the distributor connection account and can access the file on the UNC share. Everyone has permissions to the UNC share and we haven't seen this problem with other subscriptions. The distribution process account is the SQL Server Agent, which I know is not best practice but matches the configuration of the existing working replication. I temporarily tried using a (local) Windows account Again, we have tried to configure the subscribing server exactly as the working server. What are we missing? We never saw this error when setting up the previous subscription. One note: the old subscription is still up and functioning
after adding an article to the publication:"The process could not read file ... due to OS error 53" (where ... isthe full path to the .sch file).I have seen quite a few posts on this but none that would seem toresolve the problem I have as they either refer to incorrectly usingan administrative share or not enabling sufficient permissions.Everything was working OK until I added the article. When I remove thearticle and regenerate the snapshot, the subscriber can synchroniseagain. I had also recently reinitialised the subscriber (before addingthe article) and this worked fine, reading all the necessary filesfrom the snapshot location so I can't help thinking the settings forthe relevant accounts and snapshot location are OK. We have also beenadding new subscribers and they have been initialising with noproblems. The snapshot location has been set up as a share (c:\Inetpub\SQLSnapshotData, not an administrative share) with full control forthe snapshot agent account and read access for all users.I am wondering whether this is a genuine read error rather thansomething to do with the publication or subscription settings. However, when I remove the article and add it back in, generating anew snapshot each time I still get the same error. Please can anyone help with some fault-finding and diagnosis on thisone?(Merge replication using web synchronisation, server SQL 2005Standard, clients SQL 2005 Express)Jeremy Hilary Cotter 2008-11-24 18:36:19 UTC PermalinkRaw Message My experience with this is that it is a permissions issue. The way I normallysolve this is to give full read access to the everyone group, on the share. Then give read and list files and folders access to the everyone group on thefiles and folders. Now start up the pull agent again and enable logging tosee if it works or where it fails. Then selectively start restricting permissions.Post by JDSI am getting the following error at a subscriber in a merge pull"The process could not read file ... due to OS error 53" (where ... isthe full path to the .sch file).I have seen quite a few posts on this but none that would seem toresolve the problem I have as they either refer to incorrectly usingan administrative share or not enabling sufficient permissions.Everything was working OK until I added the article.
