Error 15 Grub Ubuntu
forgive ... I've completed a new installation of Puppy 4 on an old 700mhz laptop with a 40Gb HD and 256Mb ram. I followed the instructions here: http://www.puppylinux.org/manuals/puppy-40/english/how-install-puppy/full-installation The exception from the example given in the instructions was that I used hda1 grub boot error 15 as it was the only choice presented to me. On rebooting, expecting to see GRUB coming up and allowing me to boot from the HD, I got an error (which I didn't take a record of at the time, but it basically told me that GRUB could continue - presented on a black screen.) So I scratched my head and thought of re-running the Live CD and re-running grubconfig. I did this and it seemed to go okay, where I chose /dev/hda1 as the grub error 15 file not found centos destination, and also took the MBR option. On re-booting again, I find now that I'm presented with a GRUB menu showing three options: boot from Linux on /dev/hda1 Install GRUB on a floppy (which I don't have or want) Install GRUB on the Linux partition /dev/hda1 Choosing just to boot from /dev/hda1 gets me the GRUB error 15 Choosing to re-install to /dev/hda1 seems to go okay, but gets me back to the same menu, where again, choosing to boot from /dev/hda1 gets me GRUB error 15 I seem to have followed what I could understand to do, but I now seem to be going in circles. I've obviously done something wrong, but I just can't figure out what or where . I've looked at the "How To" install to an HD, but the advice points me back to using the Universal Installer and away from a manual method, as I'm using a newer version of Puppy (v4) Can anyone help me here please? Cheers ... TomF. When it gets to grub install choose install, in the 1st screen it would say sda1 if puppy is going into sda1 then in the next screen it asks in a partition and another but choose MBR do this process 2 times, at error 15 grub least this is what works for me twice running the grub install. On the reboot make sure the puppy files are saved in the sda1 or what ever partition you have installed in, be careful with all of this if you have more then 1 distro. You can open up gparted in puppy and any Linux distro while installing to confirm the partitions. The MBR might not be safe is sort of like the grub install in Lucid that says if your not sure tick all. It is misinformation. Now sometimes I have a puppy install that doesn't boot after a installation so I just reload grub2 since I have it dual booted with a distro with grub2 this seems to get it to boot correctly. Even though this is Lucid puppy it uses grub legacy as a boot loader so that file can be edited, but I have never edited grub files. I have also had problems when I have had a MS bootloader and a grub bootloader in the MBR, so I just use a hirens disc to write the mbr to all 0's, this is done only wh

You probably missed the part in the installation where you can tell the installer on which drive you want to have your bootloader. In most cases you want to use the MBR of sda and thus let the installer choose sda (NOT a partition, just the drive). You will see the option when you choose the advanced part ("Something else") on the bottom part of that dialog window. Well, it won't take long to reinstall. Enjoy, Charles.
