The machine is a fairly new Toshiba C640 Satellite laptop. Ubuntu was the only OS on it. The solution being suggested is to reinstall 12.04 which is unacceptable, as I have a lot of docs and files in my home folder which I can't lose. If not, http://askubuntu.com/questions/211109/grub-error-after-installing-ubuntu-12-10 why was 12.10 released when it doesn't work? Just curious. 12.04 grub2 12.10 data-recovery share|improve this question asked Nov 2 '12 at 19:37 Vivek Gopalakrishnan 612 2 Solution being suggested where? Also, Ubuntu 12.10 works just fine, your issue is just a corrupted bootloader, which is pretty easily fixed without reinstalling your OS. –Shauna Nov 2 '12 at 20:12 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote You could download and burn this disc, Ubuntu Secured Remix, It is also a live cd where you can boot it from the cd and then use Boot-Repair to repair GRUB. It seems that one cause of this problem is the installer thinking that you have EFI secure boot, when you don't and therefore loading the incorrect GRUB files. What you need to do is install GRUB 2. To do this you need to boot to the live instance, mount your root partition and install. From a live instance, find the partition on which your root partition is loaded. GParted will tell you this, or you could use sudo fdisk -l Go for the partition in which ubunt
