Boot your computer up with Ubuntu CDOpen a terminal window or switch to a tty.Go SuperUser (that is, type "sudo -s"). Enter root passwords as necessary.Type "grub"Type "find /boot/grub/stage1". You'll get a response like "(hd0,1)". Use whatever your computer spits out for the following lines.Type "root (hd0,1)", or whatever your hard disk + boot partition numbers are for Ubuntu.Type "setup (hd0)", to install GRUB to MBR, or "setup (hd0,1)" or whatever your hard disk + partition nr is, to install GRUB to a partition.Quit grub by typing "quit".Reboot and remove the bootable CD. I couldn't leave well enough alone I wanted to get rid of the bad XP that resided on the old drive so I used partition manager and deleted that partition and merged it with so
the fact that an error occurred or wait for the user to deal with the error. The following is a comprehensive list of error messages for the Stage 2 (error numbers for the Stage 1.5 are listed before the colon error 15 file not found press any key to continue in each description): 1 : Filename must be either an absolute filename or blocklistThis error error 15 file not found grub windows 7 is returned if a file name is requested which doesn't fit the syntax/rules listed in the Filesystem. 2 : Bad file or error 15 file not found linux directory typeThis error is returned if a file requested is not a regular file, but something like a symbolic link, directory, or FIFO. 3 : Bad or corrupt data while decompressing fileThis error is returned if the run-length https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1153398 decompression code gets an internal error. This is usually from a corrupt file. 4 : Bad or incompatible header in compressed fileThis error is returned if the file header for a supposedly compressed file is bad. 5 : Partition table invalid or corruptThis error is returned if the sanity checks on the integrity of the partition table fail. This is a bad sign. 6 : Mismatched or corrupt version of stage1/stage2This error is returned if the https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/legacy/Stage2-errors.html install command points to incompatible or corrupt versions of the stage1 or stage2. It can't detect corruption in general, but this is a sanity check on the version numbers, which should be correct. 7 : Loading below 1MB is not supportedThis error is returned if the lowest address in a kernel is below the 1MB boundary. The Linux zImage format is a special case and can be handled since it has a fixed loading address and maximum size. 8 : Kernel must be loaded before bootingThis error is returned if GRUB is told to execute the boot sequence without having a kernel to start. 9 : Unknown boot failureThis error is returned if the boot attempt did not succeed for reasons which are unknown. 10 : Unsupported Multiboot features requestedThis error is returned when the Multiboot features word in the Multiboot header requires a feature that is not recognized. The point of this is that the kernel requires special handling which GRUB is probably unable to provide. 11 : Unrecognized device stringThis error is returned if a device string was expected, and the string encountered didn't fit the syntax/rules listed in the Filesystem. 12 : Invalid device requestedThis error is returned if a device string is recognizable but does not fall under the other device errors. 13 : Invalid or unsupported executable formatThis error

As I don't use Linux that often & http://forum.ubuntu-it.org/viewtopic.php?t=407590 urgently needed more disk space, my father just stomped it down by erasing the partition and giving it a new hard drive letter where Linux was on it :/ Now, I still had the bootloader in the beginning error 15 where I could choose between both OS, so no trouble yet. Yesterday I decided to defragment my HDD, and after rebooting the system, I've got a blank screen with GRUB _ in the upper left corner. Can't press any keys, tried to boot via CD drive with:Knoppix (newest & older version), Win XP & Win 2000, Ultimate Boot Disk, but no reaction except Operating System Not Found. Again no keys working. Thanks to a recommendation from another forum, error 15 file I tried to use Super Grub Disk on a USB stick, which even worked! But what I am getting is:Booting command-listusbshiftError 12: Invalid device requestedPress any key to continue...After that the menu where I can choose between a) usbshift andb) configfile (hd0,0)/boot/sgd/sgd.lstbut I'm still getting that same error message. What should I do now???I'm not familiar with Linux commands BTW Logged HoBu Newbie Posts: 2 Re: Booting with USB - Error 12 « Reply #1 on: 2009/09/10, 16:32:00 pm » BTW if this might help:I ued Knoppix v6.0.1 to mount and work the USB stick. I typed in the console according to the German wiki:Code: [Select]cd /media/sda1
tar -xzvf /home/knoppix/Desktop/super_grub_disk_deutsch_usb_0.9795.tar.gz
sudo -s
grubThen in Grub I typed in:Code: [Select]device (hd0) /dev/sda
root (hd0,1)After that, I got the message Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0x6. Then:Code: [Select]setup (hd0)
quitI had to rework some parts as I really do not have a clue about Linux commands Logged adrian15 Administrator Hero Member Posts: 833 Please test Rescatux and report back feedback... Reboot from the live cd.After that you should not get an error 12.See what happens when you try A
