I thought to solve this by installing Ubuntu fresh over my old installation. So I downloaded the software (Ubuntu 11.04 amd64), burned a CD, and rebooted. After installation I rebooted again, and ran into troubles. I got a "GRUB error 15". I now learned this means that "the file grub wants is not there". After some reading I got stuck on what to do. So, if you could help me... I ran a dual boot (XP/Ubuntu) dual disk system. This is my configuration: Code: > sudo fdisk -l | grep -i linux /dev/sda8 46187 57080 87506023+ 83 Linux /dev/sda9 57081 57367 2305296 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda13 44620
This is a post for anyone who, like me, has been doing web searches to find out what might be the problem if your Linux machine displays GRUB Error 15 on booting. Or who has general GRUB issues to debug. My problem was Error 15, error 15 file not found redhat which indicates that GRUB cannot find one of the files it needs. If you get it error 15 file not found press any key to continue while setting up GRUB, it's often fairly easy to find out what's wrong. But if GRUB thinks it's installed OK, and you then reboot,

you can still get this message but without any further information to help you debug it. To cut a long story short, the issue for me was that the BIOS (and GRUB while booting), saw my two hard disks in a https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1745704 different order from the way the kernel saw them after booting. So my assumptions that /dev/sda was the same as (hd0) was invalid. Finding this out took a very long time, though, because, for reasons too complex to go into here, I was booting this server not from a regular CD but from an emulated CD the other side of the Atlantic. Things became a lot faster when I found this section in the GRUB documentation which explained how to make https://statusq.org/archives/2007/01/07/1267/ a bootable CD ISO image with GRUB on it. To save you the trouble, here's one: GRUB Bootable CD ISO image I could mount this and use the GRUB console command line to find out what was wrong. It's worth exploring the GRUB console, if you haven't already. It can do things like filename completion when you press TAB, and can even display the contents of text files using, for example, cat (hd0,0)/boot/grub/menu.lst In my case I found that the BIOS of the machine allowed me to choose the boot order of the hard disks, and swapping them there was the easiest solution. Hope this is useful to somebody! Possibly-related posts: Ubuntu Netboot installation If you have an existing Linux machine (already running GRUB)... DoctorBeaver I was installing Ubuntu from CD and we had a powercut while the installation was in http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-105437.html progress. Now, when I try to boot it says "Grub loading 1.5 please wait..." then a couple of seconds later I get "Error 15" and nothing else happens. I tried to http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=192527 install again from scratch but although the CD drive is accessed I get exactly the same error. Basically, I'm stuffed. Any ideas? I've got USB memory sticks, an external hard drive, error 15 external CD/DVD drive (which I've tried but got the same error) and an SDHC memory card available if any of those could offer a solution. AftershockVibe You could try the steps here after booting from the install CD: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351 DoctorBeaver AftershockVibe wrote: You could try the steps here after booting from the install CD: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351 It won't boot from the install error 15 file disk. With or without the disk I get error 15. malcolmpreen I had a similar sounding problem a while back.... can't remember the exact error... but I know I couldn't boot from the hard disk, or the ubuntu install media. I was able to switch into debug mode (from grub I think.... but I'm not 100% sure) and that was suggesting that I had a problem which needed fscking.... Fine I thought.... if only I could boot somehow.... Anyway.... long story short.... I happened to have a Fedora 10 installation DVD.... I was able to boot that OK.... enter rescue mode.... and fsck the ubuntu disk.... following that... everything was good. For the record, my Ubuntu was 8.04 - if I remember I tried booting from 8.04 and 8.10 with no luck. Best of luck... in theory... assuming you have a way to get it.... any other distribution installation MIGHT be worth a go.... Malcolm DoctorBeaver Malcolm - thanks for that. I'll give it a try. Anything is worth a try because the PC is totally useless at the moment. AftershockVibe Sorry D

When you get to the command prompt type Code: chroot /mnt/sysimage grub-install /dev/sda If there are no errors reported type exit twice to reboot. __________________ Glenn The Bassinator © ® glennzo View Public Profile Find all posts by glennzo #3 23rd June 2008, 09:32 AM antisocialist Offline Registered User Join Date: Jun 2008 Posts: 6 if i installed to sdb then would i change that to sdb or still sda? sda is my windows boot (when will adobe give me photoshop and dreamweaver for linux so i can be rid of that stupid bloatware?)? antisocialist View Public Profile Find all posts by antis
