Upon reboot after install things freeze after Grub 1.5 with a Grub Error 15 message. Is there any easy way to fix this? (I am posting this from my second computer) UPDATE: I managed to boot

Garth I used the the Final release 12.04 Ubuntu install disk, reformatted all Linux partitions, and expected a simple clean install. Other than specifying the Ubuntu Partitions, I did a basic install of 12.04. No way I did do anything to get this crap error failure! I have no idea why my install resulted in a Grub-15 error. grub2 dual-boot share|improve this question edited Oct 21 '12 at 16:05 Jorge Castro 24.4k91387589 asked May 1 '12 at 22:37 Garth 6113 grub2 does not have stage1.5 or error 15, and you should not be using grub legacy on a fresh install of 12.04. I believe wubi installs use GRUB4DOS which is a fork of grub legacy, are you sure you didn't do a wubi install? The Windows side still loads fine – I'm trying to http://askubuntu.com/questions/129689/how-do-i-fix-grub-error-15-on-new-dual-boot-install regain access to the Linux partition. Details:About a year ago I installed Ubuntu 8.x and eventually updated it to 8.10 or 9.04 as a dual boot on a Dell box along with Windows XP. I thought I'd installed Linux on it's own partition but I recall choosing some option that looked like it merged things and made the Windows partition directly accessible through the /media folder (after booted up properly). Anyway, all seemed to be humming http://www.supergrubdisk.org/forum/index.php?topic=420.0 along well for many months until this past Monday morning when there was a brief power outage and this Linux box was still up at the time. After the power came back and I went to boot it up again it was giving me an Error 15: File Not Found. Eventually I tried several of the GRUB revival processes and also got Error 17 errors. That's when I noticed that the GRUB loader was GRUB4DOS which made me wonder if I had inadvertently done the “install Ubuntu inside of Windows” option that's available with Ubuntu 9.04 and up. Aside from variations of the typical grub fix commands:grub> root (hd0,1)> setup (hd0)> exitI've also tried the latest SuperGrubDisk ad GrubRescueDisk – no luck so far and all result in either Error 15, Error 17, or even Error 6.I've run both CHKDSK and Gparted to see if maybe there were some bad blocks that needed to be found and marked. CHKDSK took awhile on several tries but none have turned up anything significant. I've also tried seeing if I could possibly re-install Ubuntu without overwriting the /home folder and settings – no luck. Matter of fact, whether I tried the install from within the LiveCD or loaded it up through the Windows Autorun I'd eventually get an error just after I chose to have it make

I am dual-booting between Ubuntu and Vista from a 2yr-old TOSHIBA laptop. The version of Ubuntu I was using is 9.10 (ok, should have updated a while back, mea culpa...) Yesterday I couldn't load Ubuntu and I got a message Code: ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[long number] done not exist. Dropping to a shell! I managed to sort out the problem thanks to this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1355385 and used Ubuntu without any problem. Now today I tried to switch the computer on again and I am getting the error message Code: GRUB loading stage 1.5 GRUB loading, please wait... Error 15 Following the advice on the post above, I updated GRUB to GRUB2 last night. Maybe I shouldn't have... The scr

I'm running this existing distro (Ubuntu) from /dev/sdb with a new OS, Gentoo, installed on /dev/sda. I'm glad I took the trouble of setting these up on different disks because I can't boot into the new OS. All I get is grub error 15 "File not found". It also gives the UUID which I have verified is correct: sudo blkid /dev/sda1: LABEL="boot" UUID="b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5" TYPE="ext2" /dev/sda2: UUID="fc34999a-e85d-4c7b-8775-30510eb4c396" TYPE="swap" /dev/sda3: LABEL="main" UUID="65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd" TYPE="ext4" The menu.lst (on /dev/sdb) for the new OS is title Gentoo Linux 3.10.7-r1 uuid b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5 #root (hd0,0) kernel /kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd I also tried kernel /boot/kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd but since the UUID goes directly to the boot partition I think this is wrong. The kernel should be correct; if I mount dev/sda1 and ls I see grub kernel-3.10.7-gentoo Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? It might be very basic; I've only been using Linux for a few years and never Gentoo except for a few days in a chroot. I should mention I also have grub2 installed on dev/sd
