The bootloader is on the MBR of the usb stick and I want to put it onto the harddrive. error 15 file not found grub windows 7 I have tried running grub and setting up the MBR on the hard drive, but attemts to load the kernel fail with "Error 15: File not found". The commands I used to try to install grub to the MBR are shown below: grub> root (hd0,0) root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 grub> setup (hd0) setup (hd0) Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... yes Checking if "/grub/stage2" exists... yes Checking if "/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes Running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 30 sectors are embedded. succeeded Running "install /grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+30 p (hd0,0)/grub/stage2 /grub/grub.conf"... succeeded Done. grub> kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.19-163.fc12.i686.PAE ro root=/dev/mapper/VolGroup-LogVol00 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.19-163.fc12.i686.PAE ro root=/dev/mapper/VolGroup-LogVol00 Error 15: File not found grub> The file vmlinuz-2.6.32.19-163.fc12.i686.PAE does exist on /dev/sda1 (which as I understand it = hda0 in grub) Anyone know what might be happening here ? Note: I'm not entirely sure exactly what grub does when booting the kernel. I used anaconder to install grub and the menu.lst file sets the root device as root (hd1,0) for some reason (there is a device.map file which points (hd1) to /dev/sda - perhaps it uses that ?). The error gives you a message "Error https://stringofthoughts.wordpress.com/2009/05/25/grub-error-15-debianubuntu/ 15: File not found!" simply because the file grub wants is not there. why? because grub is looking into a wrong device. You need to make changes to your /boot/grub/menu.lst file to fix the problem so that grub looks into the correct device but first find out where is your root partition.Boot from a live CD -> open terminal . $ sudo fdisk -l | grep -i linux This will list your swap and root devices. In our example here /dev/hda5 1276 1397 979902 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/hda6 1398 2550 9261441 83 Linux Swap :: /dev/hda5 and Linux root :: /dev/hda6 /dev/hda6 is your root device. /dev/hda6 is written as (hd0,5) in grub. Make sure you understand this if it’s /dev/hda1 in your system then you ‘ll use (hd0,0). It’s always one digit less in (hdX,Y) Open your menu.lst file and check /dev/hda6 and (hd0,5) is the root device in the file and not any other device. This is the main reason for error 15. Here in our example root is /dev/hda6 so the /boot/grub/menu.lst should look like this title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.26-2-686 root (hd0,5) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-686 root=/dev/hda6 ro initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26-2-686 title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.26-2-686 (single-user mode) root
