Upon reboot after install things freeze after Grub 1.5 with a Grub Error 15 message. Is there any easy way to fix this? (I am posting this from my second computer) UPDATE: I managed to boot

into both 12.04 and Win7 using BIOS: Selected the disk with the Win7 'C' Partition: resulted in the same error message Rebooted, tried the disk with the Ubuntu Partitions: *Grub Menu loaded: Managed to boot 12.04, rebooted, used BIOS again: Managed to boot Win 7 So, I have access to my computer again (thru BIOS), but this has been a pretty crappy install experience. Garth I used the the Final release 12.04 Ubuntu install disk, reformatted all Linux partitions, and expected a simple clean install. Other than specifying the Ubuntu Partitions, I did a basic install of 12.04. No way I did do anything to get this crap error failure! I have no idea why my install resulted in a Grub-15 error. grub2 dual-boot share|improve this question edited Oct 21 '12 at 16:05 Jorge Castro 24.4k91387589 asked May 1 '12 at 22:37 Garth 6113 grub2 does not have stage1.5 or error 15, and you should not be using grub legacy on a fresh install of 12.04. I believe wubi installs use GRUB4DOS which is a fork of grub legacy, are you sure you didn't do a wubi install? I'm running this existing distro (Ubuntu) from /dev/sdb with a new OS, Gentoo, installed on /dev/sda. I'm glad I took the trouble of setting these up on different disks because I can't boot into the new OS. All I get is grub error 15 "File not found". It also gives the UUID which I have http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/125323/grub-error-15-file-not-found verified is correct: sudo blkid /dev/sda1: LABEL="boot" UUID="b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5" TYPE="ext2" /dev/sda2: UUID="fc34999a-e85d-4c7b-8775-30510eb4c396" TYPE="swap" /dev/sda3: LABEL="main" UUID="65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd" TYPE="ext4" The menu.lst (on /dev/sdb) for the new OS is title Gentoo Linux 3.10.7-r1 uuid b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5 #root (hd0,0) kernel /kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd I also tried kernel /boot/kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd but since the UUID goes directly to the boot partition I think this is wrong. The kernel should be correct; if I mount dev/sda1 and ls I see grub kernel-3.10.7-gentoo Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? It might be very basic; I've only been using Linux for a few years and never Gentoo except for a few days in a chroot. I should mention I also have grub2 installed on dev/sda1 though I don't get as far there: it just shows the grub 'command line'. ubuntu grub2 gentoo grub-legacy share|improve this question edited Apr 18 '14 at 14:23 asked Apr 18 '14 at 3:21 Charles 147113 In which order did you installed gentoo/ubuntu? –Braiam Apr 26 '14 at 3:24 @Braiam: I installed Ubuntu first (years ago) and I've been trying to get Gentoo working for a few months now. It runs fine in a chroot but I can't get it to boot, either from its own grub2 or from Ubuntu's grub-legacy. –Charles Apr 26 '14 at 23:57 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 2 down v

You can install Ubuntu on a computer that's running Windows, and you'll have the option to dual boot using a program called Grub. A common Grub error 15 error called Error 15 can occur that will cause a blank screen to appear and make it so you will not be able to boot your computer without using a LiveCD. Things You'll Need Ubuntu LiveCD Turn on your computer. Insert your Ubuntu LiveCD into the CD drive. Restart the computer. It should boot directly from the CD drive after about 30 seconds. Wait for the Ubuntu error 15 file desktop to load on your screen. Click on the terminal window icon and wait for it to load. The icon looks like a black rectangle. Type the following commands at the terminal prompt one line at a time, pressing the "Enter" button on the keyboard after each line you enter: $ sudo fdisk --l $ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt $ sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/boot $ sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/var $ sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev $ sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc $ sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys $ sudo chroot /mnt Select the drive that you have Ubuntu installed on by using the arrow buttons on your keyboard and pressing the spacebar.
