I'm running this existing distro (Ubuntu) from /dev/sdb with a new OS, Gentoo, installed on /dev/sda. I'm glad I took the trouble of setting these up on different disks because I can't boot into the new OS. All I get

is grub error 15 "File not found". It also gives the UUID which I have verified is correct: sudo blkid /dev/sda1: LABEL="boot" UUID="b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5" TYPE="ext2" /dev/sda2: UUID="fc34999a-e85d-4c7b-8775-30510eb4c396" TYPE="swap" /dev/sda3: LABEL="main" UUID="65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd" TYPE="ext4" The menu.lst (on /dev/sdb) for the new OS is title Gentoo Linux 3.10.7-r1 uuid b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5 #root (hd0,0) kernel /kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd I also tried kernel /boot/kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd but since the UUID goes directly to the boot partition I think this is wrong. The kernel should be correct; if I mount dev/sda1 and ls I see grub kernel-3.10.7-gentoo Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? It might be very basic; I've only been using Linux for a few years and never Gentoo except for a few days in a chroot. I should mention I also have grub2 installed on dev/sda1 though I don't get as far there: it just shows the grub 'command line'. ubuntu grub2 gentoo grub-legacy share|improve this question edited Apr 18 '14 at 14:23 asked Apr 18 '14 at 3:21 Charles 147113 In which order did you installed gentoo/ubuntu? –Braiam Apr 26 '14 at 3:24 @Braiam: I installed Ubuntu first (years ago) and I've been trying to get Gentoo working for a few months now. I'm a newby from Indonesia, and I have a laptop with 2 OSes (7 and Precise) installed. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 manually by replacing Blankon 4.0's (an Ubuntu-based Indonesian distro) partition. I made /boot mountpoint and then chose it as the place for bootloading. As the result, I've been experiencing error 15 until now, grub error 15 and I have to boot my laptop from Paragon rescue kit every time I want to use it. Is there any way to solve the problem? That is the problem. The "error 15" is coming from an old grub legacy installation, Ubuntu has used grub2 for years now. What's happening is that you incorrectly installed grub's boot sector to a partition, while grub's boot sector should always go in the MBR. Boot Ubuntu then run sudo grub-install /dev/sdX where "X" is replaced with the letter of the drive you want grub installed to , like "sda" not a partition like "sda1". If you can only boot a LiveCD/USB system then you'll need to follow these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#ChRoot . share|improve this answer answered May 11 '12 at 2:22 Jordan Uggla 2,433915 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. This is the screen that I get after booting from my hard drive: GRUB: Loading. Welcome to GRUB! error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found. grub rescue> I tried installing Ubuntu Server (after numerous installs) on my partitioned hard drive. I remember them as sda5 and sda6. The install was to dual boot with Windows 7. When I first install grub, I used the i386 iso, but after I found out that I could use the amd version to optimize, I installed that. Now, grub has an error and I don't know what to do. Almost all the help tell me to use a CD-ROM, but I used a flash drive. Now, I just want to either repair grub, or get rid of Ubuntu and grub entirely, as long as I can save my Windows7 partitioned on my sda1-3. I'm very new, so step by step instructions help. boot dual-boot grub2 partitioning system-installation share|improve this question edited May 31 '15 at 17:53 Tim 14.6k858100 asked Aug 22 '13 at 22:3
