Half Life Launcher Has Stopped Working Windows 10
#1 Wugger Join Date: Sep 2008 Reputation: 69 Posts: 401 Half-Life Menu Crash Fix Okay guys, I've found exactly how to fix half life launcher keeps crashing this error. The program is DEP (Data Execution Prevention). Some reason it blocks the hl.exe file. Here are the steps on how to successfully run Half Life. {{[STEPS TO FIX HALF-LIFE MENU CRASH]}} 1. Click Start 2. Open Control

Panel 3. Click on System and Maintenance 4. Click on System 5. On the right, click on "Advanced System Settings" 6. Under Performance, click Settings. 7. Go to the last tab, Data Execution Prevention. 8. Check "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" (Adding hl.exe to exception list works for some people as well)*RECOMMENDED 9. Restart your computer. 10. Run Half-Life. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tell me if this helped. I have 32-bit vista, but it should be the same half life launcher stopped working windows 10 for XP. EDIT: Thanks to eAi for finding why this crash happens. The reason this happens is due to the way half-life works. Half-life's client.dll is encrypted, and decrypted when you start the game. In this process it copies the contents of the dll into memory, but that memory is marked as data memory, so as soon as it jumps into the dll to start the game (at 0x19489A1, where you've been having the crash), the DEP goes "Hey, this looks like a virus is trying to run code where it shouldn't be!" and crashes it with an Access Violation error, as you've seen. Turning off DEP obviously will fix it, but potentially opens your computer to more attacks from viruses etc... Ideally Valve can fix this - perhaps removing the encryption from the dll, as it's somewhat superfluous now (and there are decryptors out there). -eAi Last edited by Wugger: 01-18-2011 at 04:23 PM. This leaves other important programes (such as your web browser) protected. You can do this following the same steps as above, but selecting "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" and adding hl.exe (in Steam/steamapps/YourUserName/half-life/hl.exe). http://vlaur

Uploaded on Feb 14, 2011Without any program or any update installed, you can solve that half-life 2 (episode 1) problem (the referenced memory error). Just follow my instructions in the video!! The key to solve that problem isn't very clear in the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA5O44bdfAw video, so i paste here:+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +sd_async_prefetch_priority 1PS: *Don't forget to leave a space between them *The error may vary (the instruction and the referenced memory), but the important thing is that it is named: "HALF LIFE 2: hl2.exe Application error"*Don't forget to enable the console! copy and paste this: "-steam console" after hl2.exe or "-applaunch 22" ...sry i forgot the "r" in the word "erro" in the notepad!!*And for those who want HALF LIFE 2 Non-Steam, go here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyB69W...*If anyone have the C++ Runtime error, i found a fix for it, and you can watch it here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzhxpF...Good luck! hope it works! (did not bother to contact support again) The problem seems to lie with the Data Execution Prevention. I have DEP enabled for all applications and services (the 2nd option). To fix this problem, simply add "HL.EXE" and "Half-Life Launcher" to the exceptions and check them.
