Sometimes it would not boot and other times it would boot and load Windows. I wrote to a Dell tech and he told me to reseat my memory. I have also removed and reinstalled the battery and removed all cables with the exception of the keyboard and monitor. It continued to repeat the above error message and would not load. Yesterday I powered it up to copy the error message for you and to my surprise it booted and loaded Windows. I had no problem with any of the operations of Windows. Now that I have shut it down, when I power it up it is repeating the error message and will not load Windows. I have lights 1,2 and 3 lit on the front panel of the computer with one beep prior to the error message. I stress the word randomly, hard disk because I am able to normally boot up after powering on and off or running diagnostics after a while. I have only one WD5000AAKS hard drive installed, which makes me wonder why there is a secondary disk error. Also when I open F2 Setup Utility during the times when there is an master hard disk auto sensing problem no drives are detected. I have a Dell XPS 420 and have not installed any hardware upgrades since I purchased it 2 years ago. I have tried unplugging and replugging the appropriate cables to the hard drive, which doesn't always get it to boot. In addition, I have run the Drivers and Utilities disk on all components and all have passed (including the Hard Drive), except one time when the the hard drive test produced the following error messages: Application F:\DIAGS\DIAG32\A1310A0\Delldiag.exe has casued an exception: Interger divided by zero... System Error TNT.40025... Protected mode machine state I have backed up the HD so I am not worried about data or the cost of the a new hard drive. I just don't want to pay for a new one if that is not the problem. Please help. Tuesday, November 02, 2010 12:05 AM Reply | Quote Answers 0 Sign in t

My partition of windows 7 decided not to boot any more and said that the boot sector or file was missing or corrupt, so i ran the windows 7 repair from the install CD. During it trying to fix the problem I lost power... and now my computer (and others i try to put it into) do not recognize the hard drive. My friends Dell gave the error during POST "Error auto-sensing secondary master drive." Any ideas on how to fix this or is my hard drive shot? BTW, my HDD is a 2.5" SATA laptop drive.
