I did use my Dell ID tag to obtain the proper download for my system. The next time I powered up my computer, I recevied the error message: Error auto-sensing secondary master hard disk drive. Sometimes it would not boot and other times it would boot and load Windows. I wrote to a Dell tech and he told me to reseat my memory. secondary master hard disk error windows 7 I have also removed and reinstalled the battery and removed all cables with the exception of the keyboard and monitor. It continued to repeat the above error message and would not load. Yesterday I powered it up to copy the error message for you and to my surprise it booted and loaded Windows. I had no problem with any of the operations of Windows. Now that I have shut it down, when I power it up it is repeating the error message and will not load Windows. I have lights 1,2 and 3 lit on the front panel of the computer with one beep prior to the error message. Depending on the type of Dell you have there's either a big string of menus down the left hand side (dark blue screen) or a load of "Press Enter" options on a grey screen. Somewhere in one of these menus will be the hard drive options, and one of the entries will be either "Unknown Device" or "No drive present" or something like that. Need to change it's detection type from Auto to None. Without a specific model number one cannot be specific. 0 #3 carrottop Posted 08 May 2009 - 06:34 PM carrottop New Member Topic Starter Member 2 posts Thanks Neil...I have a Dell Optiplex GX520. I stress the word randomly, because I am able to normally boot up after hard disk powering on and off or running diagnostics after a while. I have only one WD5000AAKS hard drive installed, which makes me wonder why there is a secondary disk error. Also when I open F2 Setup Utility during the times when there is an auto sensing problem no drives are detected. I have a Dell XPS 420 master hard disk and have not installed any hardware upgrades since I purchased it 2 years ago. I have tried unplugging and replugging the appropriate cables to the hard drive, which doesn't always get it to boot. In addition, I have run the Drivers and Utilities disk on all components and all have passed (including the Hard Drive), except one time when the the hard drive test produced the following error messages: Application F:\DIAGS\DIAG32\A1310A0\Delldiag.exe has casued an exception: Interger divided by zero... System Error TNT.40025... Protected mode machine state I have backed up the HD so I am not worried about data or the cost of the a new hard drive. I just don't want to pay for a new one if that is not the problem. Please help. If so, you can test all

If the system sees the other drive, then the problem is in the disk drive and not in the computer. If the problem is found to be in the disk drive, check the drive select jumpers on the drive. The drive should be set to "cable select" and attached to the last ("master") connector on the cable. I have, however, seen a few older Maxtor drives that fail to respond when set to "cable select," but run successfully when set to "master." 0 LVL 33 Overall: Le
