Power on/Restart the computer and then start tapping the F2 key when Dell Logo appears, the machine will enter System Setup. 2. On the first page that appears see if there is a Hard Drive listed next to Fixed HDD. 3. If the Hard Drive is not listed press F9 key and Load the BIOS Defaults and then restart the computer. 4. If you again get the Hard Drive not detected message, take a technician's help to reseat the Hard Drive(if you wish to do it yourself you can refer to the service manual: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insN5110/en/sm/pdf/om_en.pdf) 5. After reseating if the Hard Drive is not detected again, you need to replace the Hard Drive. 6. If the Hard Drive is listed in Step 2, run Dell 32 bit Diagnostics on the machine (for more details on how to run the diagnostics check the User's Manual page 64: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insN5110/en/sg/sg_en.pdf) 7. If the diagnostics comes up with an error code, do reply to this post with the exact error code you get. Please do write back to us. The one you got is a good drive from a reputable source? Any chance you could try the drive on another computer? Check all connectors to be certain that they are properly cabled and firmly seated. make sure that your cable is not reversed. Make sure that you matched the colored strip on the cable with pin 1 on the drive. Let us know if that made a difference and if all connections are the way they are supposed to be. The html Service Manual is available for you. Good Luck Was this answer helpful? Yes No Voted Undo Score 4 Cancel A

I have a two year old dell windows 7 laptop that is displaying the following message on a black screen: internal hard disk drive not found. To resolve this, try to reset the drive. No bootable devices--strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility Press f5 to run inboard diagnostics. I came on here and read a previous thread on the se issue and the suggestion was to remove the hard drive and put it back in. I did that but I got the same screen. I also ran the onboard diagnostics without any issues meaning all tests passed but I'm getting the same message. If anyone can help please reply to this thread. Thank you!! Reports: · Posted 3 years ago Top Lizzy28 Posts: 11 This post has been reported. I should also add that the hard drive makes a clicking sound when I power it back on. Reports: · Posted 3 years ago Top James4455 Posts: 5 This post has been reported. This sounds like head crash. Head crash is permanent and unfortunately about the worst thing that can occur. While there are other possibilities; low voltage, failure of controller circuitry, and may possibly (hopefully) only a loose connection. I would start by looking at the bios settings an take note of how(if) the HD is found. Turn off the machine, open the case and unplug the HD and reconnect, this would be a best case sceanario. Hope this helps Reports: · Posted 3 years ago Top Lighthouse Posts: 13598 This post has been reported. Lizzy28 welcome. That does sound like your hard drive has died. Reports: · Posted 3 years ago Top James4455 Posts: 5 This post has been reported. Oops, I just realized that the op stated a laptop computer. My best guess is to replace the HD. You DO have backup, right? Right? Reports: · Posted 3 years ago Top Lizzy28 Posts: 11 This post has been reported. Yes mostly everything is backed up. Thank goodness!!
