Secondary Master Hard Disk Fail
raybro Joined: Apr 26, 2003 Messages: 5,834 First thing to try. Go to the hard drive mfr's site and download their utilities and test your drive. If it shows up bad, you don't need to buy a new computer... just a new hard drive. Saving all your data may be another question altogether. There are a couple of things to try, but first you need to determine just what the problem is. It sounds like the drive is dying, but lets be sure before doing anything else. For the time being, don't have your PC powered up unless you have a real need to do so. Other info needed: Do you have another PC available? Do you have a CD burner? raybro, Aug 14, 2003 #2 ron derenzo Thread Starter Joined: Feb 17, 2002 Messages: 116 A few followups: I do have a cd burner and an older laptop. I had also installed an additional drive in this machine a while back and NEVER used it. Maybe I can switch to that, its newer. How does one do that>? How do I make the newer drive the main drive and the older drive the secondary? Is that an easy thing to do??? A real novice here.... would be able to assist me. So, my friend's computer would no longer start up, and he asked me if I could fix it, as I fix computers often, and build my own, https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-primary-master-hard-disk-fail.155603/ etc, so I said sure. When I first got the PC and tried finding the problem, I decided it was the HDD, as the HDD had the "click of death", and was not working or showing in the BIOS. I also put my own HDD in his computer and took it all the way to the "choose partition to install Windows" portion of the Windows 7 http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/284779-32-primary-hard-disk-failure-press-continue set-up, and all seemed fine, but as I had data on the drive I stopped there. So he ordered a new HDD, as I told him that's the part he needed, and it just got here the other day, and upon installing it, the computer would not recognize it, and was giving me the "Primary Hard Disk Failure, Press F1 to Continue", so I took the drive out of his PC, put it on my main PC as a slave drive, and then ran chkdsk, which turned up no errors. After that I decided to try a different SATA cable, in a different SATA port, and it finally started up fine, and went through the Windows 7 install, but not without problems. During the first try installing Windows 7, when it got to the point where it needed to restart the computer, it did, but when it came back on, nothing displayed on the monitor, but the computer was running, so I had to hold the power button for a Hard Shut Down, and when it came back on, it said "Windows encountered an error and shut down improperly", or whatever the exact words are of that mess
getting "Primary Master Hard Disk Fail" Error Discussion in 'Hardware' started by edi98, Nov 27, 2004. edi98 Private E-2 The system is a Dell 2350, Wind XP, Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 HD. I had to do http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/im-getting-primary-master-hard-disk-fail-error.48288/ a restart because I just loaded a software. When restarting as it got to the http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?7938-Primary-master-hard-disk-failure-How-to-fix point where you choose the user you want to get in as, it froze. I could not do anything for a while. I did Ctrl+Alt+Del and then had to turn it off manually. Upon starting it again it told me that a certain Kernell file was in error or missing. Had to manually start again. From this point on every time I hard disk start it I get "Primary Master Hard Disk Fail" It gives me the option of F2 for setup or F1 to continue. F1 does not get me anywhere, and ultimately I get back at the same spot. -I have tried on a different cable, hoping that was it. I have tried every jumper position on the HD. -I have tried a HD auto-detection but it does not detect it. However at the screen where I get the master hard disk error it lists the HD as Maxtor N40P -I have tried to boot from floppy (I made a diskette form bootdisk.com) and that does not work either. I did some research on this HD and according to some similar symptoms have been experienced before by other users. (http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/maxtor-hard-disk-recovery.htm) Everything seems to indicate that the HD is gone pretty much, unless one of you guys can help with any idea or previous experience you may have had. I would like to connect this HD to my other computer as a primary slave to see if I can recover the data but I am worried if that could do something to the other comp. Can I run some kind of diagnostics? Any idea? Thank you! edi98, Nov 27, 2004 #1 Rob M. I have an older Maxtor DiamondMax (8GB) that fails to initialize every once in a while, and reports itself as a Maxtor Millenium -- whatever that is. I've no idea why the Maxtors misidentify themselves under those circumstances. In my case, it seems to have been a

Upon bootup I get Primary Master Hard Disk failure. I insert boot disk in drive: a and get the following message "dynamic drive overlay not loaded." I checked set ups. This computer has 2 hard drives. Is it not seeing the Master drive? I checked settings they seem to be set OK. How do I go about fixing this one? Is it the Master Hard drive has a sector error or something? Do I need to fdisk? I am unable to boot up into Windows95. Could someone give me some step by step instructions on how to trouble shoot this one? Thanks! The purpose of this is to allow computers with older BIOS to access larger disks than the BIOS was designed for. The dynamic drive overlay is what the disk manager uses to fool the existing BIOS. It is very likely the overlay file on your hard drive
