I tried and tried with boot disks and rescue and http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forum/helproom-1/primary-master-hard-disk-error-273365/ recovery disks to get this to work but to no avail. Then I un plugged the machine and started it up, did this a few times, at it finally cycled through. I ran a virus check , scan disk and nothing showed up. It froze last night and the same thing happened. This morning, I powered it off and on several times, each time unplugging it and I kept https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-primary-master-hard-disk-fail.155603/ getting this master hard disk fail....I finally got it to open. I'm running windows 98 and am not sure if this is WORM related or something else???? ANY IDEAS???? Help.....Its homework season and dont want to buy a new machine, just yet ron derenzo, Aug 14, 2003 #1 Sponsor raybro Joined: Apr 26, 2003 Messages: 5,834 First thing to try. Go to the hard drive mfr's site and download their utilities and test your drive. If it shows up bad, you don't need to buy a new computer... just a new hard drive. Saving all your data may be another question altogether. There are a couple of things to try, but first you need to determine just what the problem is. It sounds like the drive is dying, but lets be sure before doing anything else. For the time being, don't have your PC powered up unless you have a real need to do so. Other info needed: Do you have another PC available? Do you have a CD burner? raybro, Aug 14, 2003 #2 ron derenzo Thread Starter Joined: Feb 17, 2002 Messages: 116 A few followups: I do have a cd burner and an older laptop. I had also

It went through the install faster than I expected then right at the end it gave me some errors and then xp became non functional so I pressed the power button untill it turned off. When I turned it back on it said something like "primary master hard disk fail"and I now can only boot into the master hard disk ubuntu live cd. from there I can tell that I have an ata maxtor 6e040l1. Atleast I think that is what it is. It also says that capacity is 0.0 kb and I can't erast of format as there is nothing to erase or format. If there is any way to fix this I would be happy to hear from you. My name is Alex, I am a first time poster here. Although this is my first time contributing to the community I have used tom's hardware for various crafts and maintenance. I am in a predicament. About 6 months ago my rig (Desktop Computer) began presenting me with 3rd master hard disk errors. I was able to bypass them and restart/reboot my rig enough to where, miraculously, id be able to get windows to boot and everything was stable. My computer wasn't crashing, lagging or slow, etc. Specs: M4N68Tv-2 Asus Mobo 620 watt HCG (High current gamer) PSU HD 6950 (Flashed to a 6970) amd phenom 965 x4 @ 3.20 Ghz Western Digital HDD (Came stock with my old HP that i upgraded to what you see here) A few months ago, we lost power and my rig shut down. I had to restart it multiple times before it would boot to windows and I finally got into the OS. I ran Lifeguard, and about 2-3 other HDD scans and they ALL returned with no errors. My HDD was healthy as a horse... So, last night, big storm, lost power, RATS! My rig wont boot now. Ive tried everything i feel like. Theres a couple of goofy things going on though... Like, i cannot get into the BIOS while hdd is plugged into the mobo. Once i disconnect the sata cable running from my HD to my MoBo i can get into the bios and tweak the boot priority, etc. But i cannot, for the LIFE of me get into the BIOS while my HD is connected. It is very odd and terribly annoyng. I dont understand where the "3rd" is coming from. I dont even have 3 sata cables plugged into my motherboard. I honestly have only the ONE from my hdd going to my mobo. I disconnected m
