Just some questions: You say you installed linux on "F:". Does that mean that you can see F: in windows with all linux files? In that case you installed it with the wrong filesystem, which seriously impares functionality and performance. (The reason you shouldn't be able to see it in windows is that windows is unable to read ext2, the file system that linux normally uses) Exactly what error does GRUB give you and when? Is it when GRUB starts or is it w

It's a big black heavy beast (40kg) of a server. I use it for 3D graphics (running Linux, and mainly with Blender although I also have Maya). The machine was originally used in the making of Lord of the Rings. Anyway, it now hosts Ubuntu Linux 7.04 (I'm wanting to upgrade to 7.10 once I free up some HD space) though there's always been a problem with it... ...I have to use a floppy to boot the thing. The floppy contains "smart boot loader" and I simply tell it to "boot from hard drive" once the floppy had started. If I try booting from the hard drive without the floppy, I only ever get "Grub Hard Disk Error" at the top of the screen. Nothing in the LXF100 Boot up problems special seems to help here. Looks like it's halting with the error at the 1.5 boot stage, does not make it up to the menu.lst stuff. I don't understand why it boots from the floppy to the hard drive no problem but not directly from the HD. Some website forums have suggested flashing the BIOS to fix this error, although I would hate to trash my system trying that kind of thing. Any ideas?
