that can lead to sluggish performance or inaccessibility altogether. Such errors need to be fixed as soon as possible to avoid the loss of user time and productivity. But that is easier said than done in most cases. Hence in this article, to help you out a bit, we’ve jotted down everything there is to know about 2 irritating Exchange errors – error 528 and error 548. Do read till the end to learn about these errors, their causes and a one-stop recommended solution for them and for other simple or complex Exchange errors. Steps (3 total) 1 Exchange server error 528 528 is the error code for “failed backup restore” on Exchange. This implies that a user can see this error on trying to perform the restore operation from a stored backup. If for some reason the Microsoft Exchange backup software encounters a problem while a restore operation is underway, this error is thrown. Error 528 is related to another Exchange error – “JET_ErrMissingLogFile”. It occurs when the Exchange Database log files – Edb.log and Edb.chk – are missing from the Exchsrvr \ Mdbdata directory. Error 528 is usually followed by the failure of the Exchange VSS Writer to restore a backup. The error is normally shown to users while the integrity check is running on log files for database recovery after restore. This is the reason the symbolic name of error 528 is msgidVSSWriterLogfileIntegrityCheckError. Now let’s look at the two main files that are at the root of this error – edb.log and edb.chk. The Edb.log file contains all changes applied to database objects within the Active Directory. To ensure retrieval of data post a database crash, the database engine assigns transactions to the Ntds.dit database. But since the Edb.log file itself gets corrupted in this case, the database isn’t able to fully recover thus resulting in issues for the users. The Edb.chk file comes into picture after Edb.log. It is the checkpoint file marked by the Edb.log file to mark the point from where updates are transferred to Ntds.dit. Since in the absence of this file no transaction progress report will be available to the system, this file is of extreme importance. 2 Exchange server error 548 548 is the error code for “transaction log generation failure” on Exchange. This implies that no more transaction logs in the same sequence can be generated. Furthermore, this error confirms successful recovery of the database but states that all possible log generations in the current sequen
