I've Google'd this extensively and apparently a lot of people have this problem, but very few have found solutions. I investigated some of root causes others uncovered , such as mangled registry key values at : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\HwOrder How can I further diagnose this issue ? What could have caused a very basic system-level command such as net use to begin failing ? but in those respects my system seems to be fine windows networking hard-drive cmd.exe share|improve this question edited Jun 15 '14 at 19:31 Judith 675214 asked Feb 13 '14 at 1:36 BaltoStar 13114 migrated from serverfault.com Feb 13 '14 at 21:20 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. Is the network shared folder a Samba or a Windows share ? Also, is your machine a member of a domain ? –user2196728 Feb 13 '14 at 1:52 I've looked around the net a bit, and it looks like part of your networking stack is corrupted. Time to reimage/reinstall/reformat. –HopelessN00b Feb 13 '14 at 12:57 The network shared folder I was attempting to connect to is Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. But my understanding of net use is that it should list all shares. In the case when there are no shares, it should display a message no entries in the list. –BaltoStar Feb 13 '14 at 19:01 @BaltoStar That's correct. net use by itself should return a "table" listing the mapped drives, or something like the image here, if there are none. Like I said, it's time for you to reimage/reinstall/reformat. –HopelessN00b Feb 13 '14 at 20:17 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote S

From Toolbar - Map Network Drives = net use A pop-up box appears stating "The mapped network drive could not be created because the follwing error has occurred: The request is not supported." From Command Line Net Use = "System error 50 has occurred. The request is not supported." From RUN type \\servername or \\IPAddress = "The request is not supported." We can ping the servers by name and IP address. We can access the Internet. Email program works correctly. System = Windows XP Pro net use error SP3 Actions taken = 1. ran "repair" on NIC, 2. removed from domain and re-added, 3. removed from domain, renamed laptop, readded to domain. 4. Tested with user's profile and an admins profile. Same error regardless of actions taken. 0 Question by:ateeco Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google Best Solution byateeco Issue resolved -- Monday morning we performed a system restore to a date prior to the event. The Internet Time tab is not available if your computer is a member of a domain. I apologize I did not mention the system is in a domain. 0 LVL 1 Overall: Level 1 Message Expert Comment by:DynamicNetworx2013-01-04 Sounds like there is a Global Policy that is preventing this. Usually an erroneously applied policy or another admin limiting things causes this. Try logging in as another user, preferable complete admin rights and see if it still happens. Also, note that from a command prompt \\serv
shares. He could ping them but not browse them. After confirming he could not browse any network shares I opened up the command prompt and tried to run net use to see what connections there were. It displayed the following error... > net use > System error 50 has occurred > The request is not supported. After some Googling I discovered there was an issue with a few registry keys. There was 2 leading comma's in the below registry keys. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\HwOrder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order I deleted the 2 comma's and it started working.
