have the DOS app running under XP Mode. But I have been unable to get the Net Use command to work. I get a: System error 66 has occurred. The network resource http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/system-error-66-the-network-resource-type-is-not/3111ec92-bf45-e011-90b6-1cc1de79d2e2 type is not correct. I used: net use lpt1: \\T5500\MFC-7420 /persistent:yes I know the host computer name and printer share name are correct. (And turned on in the host's Printer Properties.) What I tried: First there was no Net View when run from XP's cmd prompt. To get this to run I did these two things: - I had installed Windows Firewall in XP. I opened https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/7667cecb-e459-43f0-a1ff-52592ead11aa/getting-system-error-66-has-occurred-when-using-net-use-in-xp-mode?forum=w7itprovirt the Security Center and for "Manage security settings for: Windows Firewall" I clicked the exceptions tab and checked "File and Printer Sharing." - In Win7's Windows Firewall Advanced Settings I turned off the private profile. I then ran Net View at XP's cmd prompt and it now listed the virtual XP computer, and only it. In XP's Control Panel I ran the Network Setup Wizard to put XP in the same workgroup (named WORKGROUP). In the host's Network and Sharing Center printers has always been checked in the Homegroup Settings. The System error 66 has not gone away. To access the host PC via the network you'd need to have XP Mode use the host's NIC and get an IP address on the local network. The default NAT option won't work properly, if at all. Solved Error 66 in "net use lpt1: XP Posted on 2009-02-03 Windows XP Windows Networking Server Hardware 1 Verified Solution 32 Comments 9,042 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-06 I have been successfully using a batch file to run "net use lpt1: \\printservername\p1" on my networked WIN98 machines. I am trying to add XPpro laptops net use to the network, and the "net use" command gives an error 66 on all the XP machines (some have a physical parallel LPT1 port, and some do not have any parallel ports. Some of the things I have tried: 1) I am the administrator on all machines 2) I have disabled all firewalls 3) I can confirm network connection to print server : 192.168.1.2 4) I have tried to delete : net use lpt1: \delete 5) I have tried upper the network resource and lower case, spelling check. However I do know that the existing batch file still works on the older machine. 6) I have tried using lpt2 and lpt3 ... however it appears that any mention of the term lptx is what is triggering the error (cannot find the network resource). The XP machines act like they do not recognize the printer ports. The printer objects name can be different from what the share name is. If you go to the properties of the printer and look sharing tab you will see the name of the share. I believe net use is looking for that. You can use the net view \\
