I have http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/system-restore-catastrophic-failure-0x8000ffff/0f9d3c3d-e276-4519-9c00-402d814a76d7 tried pressing f8, repair your computer then system restore however I keep getting the 0x8000ffff error. Unfortunately 0x8000fff is one of those http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/252794-system-will-not-restore-error-0x8000ffff.html errors with no defined roots, it crops up for all kinds of reasons and in all kinds of situations; most users never find what the actual problem was even once they've fixed it. I've just been frantically reading about this to try and find an easy solution but it seems there isn't one that I can copy/paste which will definitely sort it for you. All I can do is list some of the most common fixes. If you have the original Windows 7 disc (or a Startup Repair disc) then of course the first thing you can do is use this. Startup Repair Alternatively you could attempt starting in safe mode, and then run system restore. Safe Mode Last but not least (and far from easiest) is to image your system drive, which I've read can help two thirds of people afflicted with this problem (that information came from only one source and I'm not wholly ready to believe it). I'll be honest, I've done a system image but the following tutorial is comprehensive. System Image Recovery Note: It is an involved process and will take some time (s'why I've never done it!), as well as getting used to some things you've never done on a computer before. Hope this helps. I can make an unexpected restore points easily, but if I try to go back to one, I get this: System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: Access is denied. (0x80070005) You can try to run System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method. For more information, see What is Recovery? There are two buttons underneath that say "Run System Restore" and "Close." I tried to click an unexpected error "Run System Restore," but that gave me another error: There was an unexpected error: Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF) Please close System Restore and try again. The one button underneath says "OK." I have tried this multiple times and nothing seems to work. I have turned System Restore off, and then on, but after creating a new restore point, the result is the same. I do not have any restore points that I need right now, so I am just looking to the future. At all costs I would rather not re-install Windows. I also have a third party backup program which I use, but I would like to use System Restore as well. windows-7 system-restore share|improve this question edited Sep 4 '13 at 23:03 Scott 11.5k112650 asked Sep 4 '13 at 22:42 j.m.g.r 11615 Did you try to do it from Safe-Mode ? –Amirreza Nasiri Sep 4 '13 at 22:43 I attempted this from safe mode, but I received the same error messages. –j.m.g.r Sep 9 '13 at 20:01 I attempted to run "svc /scannow" from command prompt, and then in an elevated command prompt, and then in run, and then with quotes, and then without quotes, each time I recived the error "'scv' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." –j.m.g.r Sep 9 '13 at 20:04 Try running chkdsk /f /r to fix any errors. –leDominatre Jul 12 '15 at 23:30 @Ramhound I assume you mean sfc /scannow. –leDomin
