The problem is that when we have to deal with some larger files, we face several times exceptions with the message "Can't http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1807934/ms-access-cant-open-any-more-tables open any more tables". How can we avoid that? We already close all our instances of PreparedStatements and RecordSets, and even set their variables to null, but even so this exception continues to happen. What should we do? How can we avoid these nasty exceptions? Does someone here knows how? Is there any additional configuration to the ODBC drivers on Windows that we can change to avoid this problem? java ms-access jdbc jdbc-odbc share|improve this question edited Apr 8 '15 at 15:59 Gord Thompson 55.8k74592 asked Nov 27 '09 at 10:25 Kico Lobo 2,71322441 Any code to share? –Kennet Nov 27 '09 at 11:49 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 6 down vote accepted "Can't open any more tables" is a better error message than the "Can't open any more databases," which is more commonly encountered in my experience. In fact, that latter message is almost always masking the former. The Jet 4 database engine has a limit of 2048 table handles. It's not entirely clear to me whether this is simultaneous or cumulative within the life of a connection. I've always assumed it is cumula

Cannot open any more tables. 100+ P: 332 Mariostg In Access 2003, I get this message just by hovering on the linked https://bytes.com/topic/access/answers/951184-cannot-open-any-more-tables tables in the table window and letting the mouse in place long enough for the link location tip to pop up then move the mouse pointer to the next table. I am wondering if that is just me. Number of tables hovered http://database.ittoolbox.com/groups/technical-functional/access-l/cannot-open-any-more-tables-3090389 is rather inconsistent. Anywhere between 20-60 tables. I tried on 2 different databases and they both do it. I can get subject message to appear by hovering back and forth on the tables of a database that has about 30 tables. Just cannot open curious if anyone can duplicate this. Or provide some explanation. Wow,work must be slow there, lol. I've used many 2003 Access DBs with linked tables and never saw anything like this. But I've never had that much hover time available. Jim Aug 27 '13 #2 reply Expert Mod 2.5K+ cannot open any P: 4,993 zmbd I haven't seen this since once I rebuilt all of the files from '97 into 2003. Appeared to be some issue with converting the old files to the newer format. ACC: Error Message: Can't Open Any More Tables As this article notes, the newer Jet/ACE engines should have this fixed. Long ago, I would occationally ran into this with other people's applications when they haven't explictly closed their record sets in VBA (i.e: set someobject = nothing) and then several reports and other forms get opened etc... is this the case here? Aug 27 '13 #3 reply 100+ P: 332 Mariostg @jimatqsi Just hovering the tables. But nothing slow. In fact one of my database has been in use since 2007, 160 users no problem. I am just puzzled as to why it does this. It's like if by hovering the table it would open. I read somewhere the max number of open tables is 2048 less internally open tables... Yeah I guess I got bored and suddenly started to hover lol. @zmbd After I realized this, I started the database with shift-Enter to go straght into tables window. I can replicate the problem every time. I had seen that link earlier too. BTW the error I get does not list an error message number, just one line of text. Yet both database are very responsive. I think I am going to create a blank db and link it to see what it does. Second Edit: I cre

Cannot open any more tables Thomas Mercer-Hursh asked Oct 30, 2009 | Replies (31) We are getting this error once or twice a day now. It is true that this application has a moderate number of tables and that some of the tables have a *lot* of fields. It is also true that it is occurring when the operator has 8 or 9 forms open, some of which have 10 tabs. But, this doesn't really seem like a lot. I saw some stuff on a google search that seemed to me to be dubious or painful advice, like basing all forms on a table instead of a query, which makes no sense here, or putting an ope
