What user is the program running as? Does the bak file exist? Can you access it manually? –Pekka 웃 Oct 18 '10 at 14:41 1 Should we assume this is for SQL Server from the file path, since you didn't put the product in the tags or title? –Powerlord Oct 18 '10 at 14:42 I was able to run this query before I reformatted my laptop if it does any help. This is SQL Server 2008 and I am running as an administrator. The bak file does not exist since I am on the process of creating it with this query. –Smiley Oct 18 '10 at 14:45 @Smiley Face: You have to read the SQL file through your local, not network. So it means you will have to move the SQL file from the network to your local drive first, and restore it. –mrjimoy_05 Apr 8 '13 at 8:13 add a comment| 13 Answers 13 active oldest votes up vote 133 down vote accepted Yeah I just scored this one. test scripts on my database. Just like every DBA, I decided to take backup of my cannot open backup device operating system error 5 failed to retrieve database - this way I can restore it back to attain an original database state. As soon as I ran the backup command sql server cannot open backup device operating system error 2 I ended up with the following error. This error is due to a permissions issue on the local disk and user account which is running SQL Server. In this blog post we will talk about the operating system error. Msg http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3960257/cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-5 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device ‘C:\AdventureWorks.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Fix/Resolution/Workaround: I checked which user accounts my SQL Server services are running.I gave full permission to that account to get rid of the error.NOTE: This whole experience was done on the my personal machine and not on the production server. Please check with your network administrator for permission on production server.Let me know if you have ever faced such http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2011/04/13/sql-server-fix-error-msg-3201-level-16-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-5access-is-denied/ error and if you have, how did you fix the error. Leave new Eugene April 13, 2011 12:24 pmSimple but useful topic =) ThxReply Jonathan Kehayias April 13, 2011 12:41 pmHey Pinal,The secure way to solve this problem is to place the backup file in the BACKUP directory for SQL Server which will have the necessary permissions granted on it for the service account already. Access to the root of any storage device in Windows is secured by default in Windows Server 2008 and 2008R2 and I wouldn't recommend adding to the ACL list there, I generally remove permissions from the root to further lock down the system.Reply pinaldave April 13, 2011 2:10 pmJonathan,Thanks this is great comment.Reply DCP March 6, 2014 9:35 pmThank u for u r suggestion Kamlesh Harijan June 16, 2012 11:15 amworked by copying to backup director
