SERVER - FIX - Error 3201 - Cannot open backup device. Operating system error 3 January 30, 2015Pinal DaveSQL Tips and TricksNo CommentsThis blog is in continuing to use the default values. Earlier this week I wrote a blog which cannot open backup device operating system error 5 failed to retrieve talked about the failure of Create Database Command. Let see in this

blog post how we can solve the error 3201.While working on the reproduction of the issue, I changed the parameters
Cannot Open Backup Device Operating System Error 5
and later realized that the backup database command was also failing. If you rely on the default values for folders that don’t exist, this will raise an error message as shown below. https://sqlbackupandftp.com/forum/yaf_postst81_Operating-system-error-3.aspx Here is the simple command which I have run: BACKUP DATABASE MASTER TO DISK = 'master.bak' The command was failing with below error. Here is the text of the message shown in image: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot open backup device ‘E:\InvalidPath\master.bak'. Operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1BACKUP DATABASE is terminating http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2015/01/30/sql-server-fix-error-msg-3201-level-16-state-1-line-1-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-3the-system-cannot-find-the-path-specified/ abnormally. If you notice the error message is pretty clear. The backup is going to path “E:\InvalidPath” which is an invalid folder on my system. Important point to note here is that I have NOT given any file path in the command, I have just given file name master.bak.The question is, from where the path is picked? If you have read my previous blog, it’s picked from “BackupDirectory” value in registry location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQLServerThe highlighted portion might change based on SQL Version and Instance ID. For me it’s MSSQL12 because this is SQL Server 2014 instance. And my instance name is SQL2014:SQL VersionFolder NameSQL Server 2008MSSQL10SQL Server 2008 R2MSSQL10_50SQL Server 2012MSSQL11SQL Server 2014MSSQL12For example, if you have SQL Server 2012 default instance, it would be MSSQL11.MSSQLServer.Here is the registry valueWe can change it via SQL Server Management Studio too. You can right click on server node and go to properties. Then choose “Database Settings” tab.If you want to use T-SQL then here is the script. EXEC xp_instance_regwrite N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', N'Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer', N'BackupDirectory', REG_SZ, N'E:\InvalidPath' GO NOTE: Once you have changed the value, SQL Service restart is needed so that SQL can pick-up changed val
SERVER - Backup on mapped drive failing with error - Error 3201, Level 16, State 1 March 18, 2015Pinal DaveSQL15 commentsWe are so used to taking backups and it can sometimes give us new experiences. http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2015/03/18/sql-server-backup-on-mapped-drive-failing-with-error-msg-3201-level-16-state-1-operating-system-error-3the-system-cannot-find-the-path-specified/ One of the common messages I see are around taking backups on a share. If you have found this blog while searching for error message, then you may want http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/51525/sql-server-2008-database-restore-error-cannot-open-backup-device-15105 to look at below blogs as well if you are NOT dealing with mapped drive. Let us learn about Error 3201.SQL SERVER – Error: Fix: Msg 5133, Level 16, State cannot open 1, Line 2 Directory lookup for the file failed with the operating system error 2(The system cannot find the file specified.) – Part 2This time I will explain why you are getting this error while taking backup on a mapped drive. Here is the situation:SQL Server Service runs under a domain account. You have already mapped the drive in Windows and cannot open backup can see that drive in Windows Explorer. You are not able to see the drive which is mapped. Below is the screenshot of the screen where you choose a backup file name. If you try to take a backup from SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) you are not able to see the drive. As we can see, SSMS is only showing local drive (C and D) Backup command is failing with below error.Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device ‘Z:\master.bak'. Operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. If we try to get details about the drives visible from SQL Server by Windows “dir” command then we see below. xp_cmdshell 'dir Z:' Output ------------------------------- The system cannot find the path specified. NULL (2 row(s) affected)Above confirms that SQL is not able to see Z drive, even though it is mapped on Windows. In case you get below errorMsg 15123, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_configure, Line 72 T

Operating system error 3(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. The code that I used in SQL Server is as follows (I also tried using the dialog screens and got the same result) RESTORE DATABASE DEX FROM DISK = 'Z:\FULL_BACKUP.bak' WITH MOVE 'Decri' TO 'E:\Test\DEX.mdf', MOVE 'Decri_log' TO 'E:\Test\DEX.LDF' It may be worth noting that the "FULL_BACKUP" is created by the same SQL server, without any issues (so I assume that the server has permissions). Drive Z is a network path, for which there is 'full access' to all domain users. The full backup is 200Gb Drive E (local) has 500Gb free space Any help would be appreciated. sql sql-server sql-server-2008 backup share|improve this question asked Oct 15 '13 at 11:34 SeanAnd
