Confusingly, you can also get "hardware error" from a configuration error. Let's say you have an IP mask of 255.255.255.0 (i.e. the default). You have two PCs, with IP addresses 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1. If you ping one from the other you get "hardware error". Change the mask to 255.255.0.0 and it works perfectly. 10:52 AM Siju George said... Hi Alan,If your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, it belongs to Class c address. Everything works fine but after I wake the laptop from sleep mode I try to ping and I keep getting a hardware error. After I restart the laptop everything works fine again until it goes into sleep mode again. I've tried looking for other similar problems on google but haven't found anything yet. http://www.corenetworkz.com/2009/05/ping-gives-hardware-error.html Just wanted to see if anyone else has run into the same problems or had any suggestions as this is getting very annoying. It may be that the NIC isn't reactivating after going to sleep. If it's a Dell I would almost guarantee it. You can always try to recreate the ha

They can http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/hardware-error-with-ping.3225042/ all ping themselves. They have all the same property ''Link speed and duplex''=auto-detect. All the machines can ping machines with IP adresses 10.1.XXX.XXX except 1 computer. And this is my problem. When this computer (@IP=10.2.XXX.XXX) try to ping machines with 10.1.XXX.XXX IP adresses, the following output appears: hardware error hardware error hardware error hardware error The computer who can not ping has the following hardware error operating system: microsoft windows xp professional x64 edition version 2003 sp1 This is a new machine which I installed last week. Can you tell me why this computer cannot ping 10.1.XXX.XXX adresses? Is there a problem with filters in the firewall of windows?
