issue lies for me: Both the production and backup box are running services under the same domain accounts, let's call it "domain\sqlagent" domain\sqlagent has domain admin rights on backupserver and prodserver I can login to both the production and backup servers using the domain account, map drives, hit administrative shares, drag and drop files, etc between the servers If I use xp_cmdshell to try and simply move a file between prodserver and backupserver, I receive the above error as well. However, if I open an cmd window and execute the move command from DOS, it will successfully move. There is a development server on the domain as well (devserver) using domain\sqlagent to run the service accounts, and I can successfully backup databases from dev to prod, dev to backup, backup to dev, backup to prod, prod to dev, but NOT prod to backup Finally, if I create a maintenance plan in SSMS, I cannot create a connection to the backup server (err

We have already covered ways to can easily backup all your SQL server databases to a local hard drive, but https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/9e3bcf70-7d47-4ac4-a29f-b61a3bc173a4/error-1326-logon-failure-when-attempting-to-backup-to-remote-server?forum=sqlsecurity this does not protect against drive and/or system failure. As an extra layer of protection against this type of disaster, you can copy or directly create your backups on a network share. Backup Locally and then Copy to the Network Share The preferred and most direct way to accomplish this task is simply to create a local backup of a database and then http://www.howtogeek.com/51788/how-to-backup-sql-databases-to-a-network-share/ copy the respective backup file to a network share. You can do this by creating a batch script which looks like this: SET LocalFolder=C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLBackupSqlCmd -E -Q "Backup Database MyDB To Disk='%LocalFolder%MyDB.bak'"XCopy "%LocalFolder%MyDB.bak" "\192.168.16.55BackupDatabases" /Z /VDEL "%LocalFolder%MyDB.bak" This script does the following (line by line): Sets a variable to the local SQL backup directory. Creates a SQL backup of MyDB (using Windows Authentication) to the local SQL backup directory. Copies the local backup file to a network share. Deletes the local backup file. Again, this is the preferred method because it works out of the box and likelihood of a backup failure is minimal since the backup is created on a local disk. However, if you do not have a enough disk space to store local copies of backup files this action will fail. In this event, you will need to add additional disk space or backup directly to a network share. Backup Directly to a Network Share Typically, when you try to create a backup directly to a network share using a command such as: SqlCmd -E -Q "Backup Database MyDB To Disk='\192.168.16.55BackupDatabasesMyDB.bak'" You

Try to change the account used in your backup job to your account and see if it works. I guess the drive is only mapped when a user is logged in, so the backup won't happen when no one is logged in... –duenni Sep 12 '11 at 16:14 The drive is mapped because I can see it in the file manager under computer. I have added an edit with the error message –JFB Sep 12 '11 at 16:19 2 Operating system error 1326 = ERROR_LOGON_FAILURE (Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password). By default, the Microsoft SQL Server Service is running under the LocalSystem (or NetworkService account). Such accounts are unable to access the network share in question, therefore the backup task to remote location will fail. –Sergey Sep 12 '11 at 16:3
