found a very interesting solution to the problem. The error was as mentioned below:Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open cannot open backup device operating system error 5 failed to retrieve backup device ‘d:\Log\aw.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. Personally, I know this error happens whenThere is no directory with LogThere is not enough sql server cannot open backup device operating system error 2 space on drive d:\There is not enough permissions on d:\Log driveIn my case all of the above were not the reason for above error. The error was there because of the file was read only. There was already another backup file which existed in the folder with the name aw.bak and it was marked as read only. Due to the same reason, my backup was failing. Once I removed the checkbox for reading only, the backup

Operating System Error Reply to Topic Printer Friendly Author Topic gypo Starting Member 9 Posts Posted-07/03/2008: 14:20:02 HiI am having trouble trying http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2014/12/08/sql-server-fix-error-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-5access-is-denied/ to get MSSQL to backup to a network drive. This is the setup:+ MSSQL on Windows Server 2003 logged in under Win Auth.+ Shared drive on Vista desktop PC (although same issue happens on XP).+ Server and PC are in the same workgroup (no domain only workgroup).+ PC allows everyone full control to share.+ Drive and folder can be navigated to through Windows Explorer without the need for a password http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=106020 ("Password protected sharing" is turned off). The error I am getting is:Cannot Open Backup Device 'path_to_file'. Operating system error 5(error not found).Script being used: BACKUP DATABASE [MyDB] TO DISK = N'\\path_to_file\MyDBBackUp.BAK' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = 'Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 GO As the network is not on a domain, I can not explicity give the server user permission. None the less, the drive can be viewed/modified through Windows Explorer.I've just noticed that while typing this post that the "MSSQLSERVER" service is running as "Local system account". Is it therefore likely that this local account does not have access to external resources? Should I be running the service with a non local account, for example an account that has Admin permissions? Thanks :)Rob sodeep Flowing Fount of Yak Knowledge USA 7174 Posts Posted-07/03/2008: 14:23:47 Should be running in domain account. maninder Posting Yak Master USA 100 Posts Posted-07/03/2008: 23:13:19 yes check your credentials, also the remote drive Security. Try to change the account used in your backup job to your account and see if it works.
