Re: Can't start VMware Workstation 5 ianmacd Jun 1, 2005 5:25 PM (in response to Liz) I should have stated that I have tried all of the obvious fixes. For example:\[ianmacd@sagan]$ LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/vmware/lib vmware /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libexpat.so.0: cannot read file data: Error 21As you can see, this just shifts the problem to a different library. It's as if something is fundamentally wrong with the installation, but reinstalling does not help. Do 'ldconfig', there's no harm in it. –AbiusX Jun 5 '11 at 21:02 14 +1 to @AbiusX comment - running sudo ldconfig (assuming that libraries are in fact where they should be [/usr/bin/lib/, /usr/bin/include/, /usr/local/lib/ and /usr/local/include/ AFAIK], please correct me if I'm wrong) can resolve that problem. Cheers! –AeroCross Nov 16 '11 at 18:11 add a comment| 13 Answers 13 active oldest votes up vote 57 down vote accepted Update While what I write below is true as a general answer about shared libraries, I think the most frequent cause of these sorts of message is because you've installed a package, but not installed the "-dev" version of that package. Well, it's not lying - there is no libpthread_rt.so.1 in that listing. You probably need to re-configure and re-build it so that it depends on the library you have, or install whatever provides libpthread_rt.so.1. Generally, the numbers after the .so are version numbers, and you'll oft
give errors during booting. I did not install anything new. However, for last couple of days there were some strange behavior of my system. Sometimes it did not run a console or some pdf viewer for a very long time. If I wait like several minitues then console showed up. Another strange thing was related with my external harddisk. My computer started to see external harddisk as read-only system. When I try to boot the following massage comes INIT: cannot execute "/etc/X11/prefdm" and then login information is asked but in pure text mode. I can login, however during login the following errors appear. -bash: /dev/null: Permission denied -bash: /dev/null: Permission denied -bash: /dev/null: Permission denied -bash: /dev/null: Permission denied -bash: /dev/null: Permission denied -bash: /dev/null: Permission denied -bash: /dev/null: Permission denied -bash: /etc/profile.d/glib2.sh: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `newline´ -bash: /etc/profile.d/glib2.sh: line 1: `´ /bin/grep: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libpcre.so.0: cannot read file data: Error 21 /bin/grep: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libpcre.so.0: cannot read file data: Error 21 /bin/grep: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libpcre.so.0: cannot read file data: Error 21 /bin/grep: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libpcre.so.0: cannot read file data: Error 21 -bash: .: /etc/profile.d/less.sh: is a directory -bash: : command not found In addition my file system becomes read-only. I found after searching in internet a way to fix read-only problem. I tried following and it helped for read-only problem. mount -n -o remount / I have also problem with shutdown. If I try to shutdown following massages come shutdown: warning: cannot opern /var/run/shutdown.pid INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal INIT: cannot execute "/etc/rc
