Windows 7: chkdsk - chkdsk cannot open volume for direct access windows 7 cannot open volume for direct access 08 Apr 2015 #1 sh4dow Windows 7 Ultimate x64 6 posts chkdsk - cannot open volume chkdsk cannot open volume for direct access server 2008 for direct access Anything I've found about this relates to dead hard drives or driver issues. I however have no issues aside from chkdsk annoying me. To explain: I guess Windows didn't take too kindly to the latest BSOD and upon reboot, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/chkdsk-error-cannot-open-volume-for-direct-access/5f8c4a7f-e609-445b-a63d-aa63f7112440 I got that error for my primary drive. But it boots fine. Of course it should probably be checked. But... Getting rid of the annoying chkdsk prompt is a much higher priority to me. Does anybody here know how I could convince chkdsk to either not run or to make it work (I.e. get rid of the direct access issue)? It is a Crucial m4 SSD by the way and SMART values are perfectly fine. When you run Check Disk (CHKDSK) or AutoChk on a partition on which NT is installed you may receive one of the following messages Cannot lock volume for direct access Cannot open volume for direct access This can be caused by a 3rd party application locking the partition such as a virus checker or disk monitor tool. To correct disable any 3rd party services or devices that may for direct access be locking the partition. Start the Services control panel applet (Start - Settings - Control Panel - Services) Select the service and click Startup Set the startup type to Manual and click OK Repeat for any other services Start the Devices control panel applet (Start - Settings - Control Panel - Devices) Set the startup type to disabled for any 3rd-party devices who you think might be causing the lock problem but BE CAREFUL. If you are unsure the device you are disabling may stop system startup create a second hardware profile and test (see 'Q. How can I safely disable a device?'). Just run the following batch file from the cmd shell or from Scheduled Tasks to take care of the "Volume/Services running" issue: @echo off rem File: Chk_Disk.bat rem Use: WinXP rem Synopsis: rem Chkdsk.exe will not run from the command-line becuase it thinks the rem volume is mounted and there are file conflicts. So best to restart in order rem for it to run. This also forces all running applications to be unloaded. rem chkdsk rem /f = Fix Issues Found rem /v = Display Cleanup Info for NTFS Volumes rem /r = Find ba

Upon reboot, scandisk starts to load normally but then it spits out "cannot open volume for direct access." I've never seen this error before. Any suggestions on what is going on and how to fix it? At least that would be my first thought. Admittedly, I haven't neede
