Our software first creates the dump device using a path with a folder created with the current date-time so it is unique. The error is happening for one of clients running our http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic201108-24-1.aspx software where the dump device is using a network drive. It works for any of the new databases that were created recently. All the databases are on SQL Server 2000. The backup works if I create the dump device to a known path (path that exists already). But for the other databases it works just fine the otherway. The backup is called through the software and can't be changed right now for a simple fix. The backup process backs up the SQL part and other important data files. The sample commands being called (It errors directly in Query Analyzer).exec sp_addumpdevice N'disk', N'AFW02_20050622155554', N'F:\DATA\Backup\AFW02_20050622155554\AFW02_20050622155554.bak' BACKUP DATABASE [AFW02] TO [AFW02_20050622155554] WITH NOINIT , NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'AFW02_20050622155554', NOSKIP , STATS = 10, DESCRIPTION = N'AFW02_20050622155554', NOFORMATThe error is:3201160Cannot open backup device '%ls'. Device error or device off-line. See the SQL Server error log for more details. It is a networked drive and the folder AFW02_20050622155554 doesn't exist yet. It is actually created when backuping a database to the dump device. Again it works ju
to backup a database Discussion in 'General DBA Questions' started by Joozh, Apr 19, 2005. Joozh New Member This has been a funny http://www.sql-server-performance.com/forum/threads/error-while-trying-to-backup-a-database.5568/ week. things that were running just fine till last week (and for the last many months) have started giving problems despite that I have not changed any settings. The problem is that one of my scheduled jobs has started failing. The job used to simply takle a backup of a database. When I tried to probe into it and tried to manually take the backup cannot open (via Enterprise Manager..) I get a dialog box with the message: Cannot open backup device 'D:BackupSales'. Device error or device off-line.See the SQL server error log for more details. Backup database is terminating abnormally. Can someone kindly guide me how to solve this. Many TIA. Joozh, Apr 19, 2005 #2 dineshasanka Moderator This occurs when the user account under which the MSSQLSERVER service is running cannot open backup does not have the appropriate permissions to access the network path. check this for more infomation http://www.quantumsoftware.com.au/SupportDownloads/KB/Article.aspx?ID=15 quote:Originally posted by Joozh This has been a funny week. things that were running just fine till last week (and for the last many months) have started giving problems despite that I have not changed any settings. So how come the job is failing for one account while another similar job is not failing despit
