or directory” up vote 1 down vote favorite I am trying to install the transcription software Express Scribe. I have installed it just fine on my HP Chromebook 14, but now I'm trying to do it on my desktop. Here is what I started with: sudo su tar -xvzf scribe.tar.gz sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0:i386 Everything works fine up until this point; in fact, on my HP Chromebook 14, all I have to enter is the following: libasound2 ./scribe And it automatically installs. However, on my desktop running Ubuntu 14.04, it's apparently not as simple. After I enter that last command I get the following: Please wait while installer is initialising..... Release Date: Fri Jan 30 00:51:58 IST 2009 Express Scribe 4.31 /tmp/selfextract.FKS8f2/bin/scribe: error while loading shared libraries: libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Installation cancelled So I have tried the following: sudo apt-get install ia32-libs And I get the following message: Package ia32-libs is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However the following packages replace it: lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32bz2-1.0 E: Package 'ia32-libs' has no installation candidate So I guess I'm stuck? Not quite sure what to do from here... software-installation share|improve this question asked Jun 12 '14 at 20:12 robersonj 613 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote Hope you where able to find the solution! Looks like they have pulled ia32-libs from the 14.04 repo. You can install any package with 32bit compatibility using program:i386 sudo apt-get install libasound2:i386 share|improve this answer answered Oct 16 '14 at 0:04 user339085 212 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using

First i had problem only with sound (no sound), now I cant run some applications like firefox. It gives me error in attached code snippet Of course I have installed libasound2 and libasound2-dev. I found /usr/lib/libasound.so, but i didn't find libasound.so.2. NOTE: /usr/lib/libasound.so is broken symbolic link to libasound.so.2.0.0 Why broken ? I https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/25463643/Problem-with-libasound-so-in-Ubuntu.html started 'sudo apt-get install libasound2' and 'sudo apt-get install libasound2-dev' before. Problem started after reinstalling some libs and modules. Any solution? Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] Hi, I compiled the alsa libs using the following CC=arm-linux-gcc ./configure --target=arm-linux --host=i686-linux --prefix=/root/arm-alsa/ make make install changed the directory to alsa-utils and executed the following 1. CC=arm-linux-gcc ./configure --target=arm-linux --host=i686-linux --with-alsa-prefix=/root/arm-alsa --with-alsa-inc-prefix=/root/arm-alsa the configured failed with the same error checking for ALSA CFLAGS... -I/root/arm-alsa checking for ALSA LDFLAGS... -L/root/arm-alsa -lasound -lm -ldl -lpthread checking for libasound headers version >= 1.0.9... not present. configure: error: Sufficiently new version of libasound not found. 2.CC=arm-linux-gcc ./configure --target=arm-linux --host=i686-linux --with-alsa-prefix=/root/arm-alsa --with-alsa-inc-prefix=/root/arm-alsa/include he configured failed with the same error checking for ALSA CFLAGS... -I/root/arm-alsa/include checking for ALSA LDFLAGS... -L/root/arm-alsa -lasound -lm -ldl -lpthread checking for libasound headers version >= 1.0.9... found. checking for snd_ctl_open in -lasound... no configure: error: No linkable libasound was found. 3.CC=arm-linux-gcc ./configure --target=arm-linux --host=i686-linux --with-alsa-prefix=/root/arm-alsa/lib --with-alsa-inc-prefix=/root/arm-alsa/include it worked partially as it is not able to find libcurses and ncurses. I copied the required libraries and include file to the respective directories and it started configuring and compiling without any issue. Thank you very much for help. I tried the above option but somehow didn't work at that time and also my brain might have stalled during the process. Any way i still need to compile for PPC which should work with the same proceure. Thanks and Regards Harish Kumar.B On 10/6/09, Jaroslav Kysela
